I'll try to keep this short but here goes... We bought a pontoon in May with the above mentioned motor. Guaranteed in perfect condition just needed new stator which they gave me to have put on. Had been ran across lake in May (without stator) so we bought it, brought it home only to find it would not idle, it ran wide open at 4500+ RPM's. Never put it in the water, just hooked ears up. Took it to shop and they tell us it's a oil pump freeze up problem that sheared a gear in motor, ok so we order the gear and when they are opening the motor up they find the pistons and heads (?) are scorched!!!!! We had the head rebuilt and installed all new pistons, rings, gaskets, etc... They begin putting it back together (we had them disengage oil pumping system so we could mix our own) upon breaking it in it started backfiring and clanking, throwing water on them, etc.... They killed it and now it won't start. Some things look fishy to my husband, so I thought someone out there could pin point a few things to look at, a Mercury "guru" is supposed to have me on his list to take a look in 3-4 weeks. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have pics of the burnt head if anyone wants to see them.
