I have a 2004 Johnson 40 HP four stroke that has a brown oily discharge from the breather hose after 5-10 minutes of use. If the hose is connected to the air silencer that goes over the flywheel, it will then down the back into a reservoir and then back into air intake, which then I can not start it.

Since I noticed all the brown oily liquid dripping down, I removed the hose. It spurts out randomly and has air bubbles in it. I have checked the oil from the dipstick and it's full and clear. Can anyone point me in a direction to troubleshoot? Unburnt fuel? PCV?

On an automobile engine, I would look to clean the PCV valve. You can check the oil for gasoline infiltration, as well, by smell.

Agreed. I’m not savvy on these 4 strokes but I have head of them getting gas in the oil much like a car would from a leaking fuel pump. Are you sure the oil is not over filled? I have gotten a few great lawn mower from the free pile that simply were over filled.
