I am considering a boat with a 2003 150 HP engine. I've been told by other boaters to stay away from Johnson engines. I would like to get feedback from people who have owned or currently own Johnson engines. Are they problematic? Do they last? How do they compare to Mercury or Yamaha? Thanx.

what model is the engine. The late 90s and early 2000s Fitch motors had a lot of problems. But if it is carrbed it is ok as long as it is in good condition and has been taken care of. Johnson as a whole is as good as any other motor, some of them seem to be bullet proof.

To add to what Sparkie said, I own both a '98 Johnny 150HPV6 (carb) and a Merc 135HPV6(carb). The designs of the blocks are quite similar, both being 60* loop charged V6 motors. The Johnny has 6 one bbl carbs(fitted to 2 three bbl throttle bodies), to the Merc's 3 two bbl carbs.

The Johnny is more pretty to look at with the cowling off(IMHO), and has the added advantage of Quickstart and S.L.O.W. The Merc you need to advance the throttle manually, for cold starting. The ign systems are different, but equivalent, the props can be interchanged with some minor alterations.

The Merc oil injection is a real piece of junk, also.

somebody clearly doesnt have their facts straight, whoever told you their junk must not know much about outboards.. all i buy is johnson/evinrude and probably will never switch to another brand. some of the best outboards out their minus the failure aka ficht motors, other than that.. no worries
