2003 Johnson 140 Outboard no compression

I have an 2003 johnson 140 with no compression in the 4th cylinder. Does anyone have any idea what a repair like that would cost? I'm trying to see if it's worth fixing seeing as how I've kind of lost faith in Johnson after this. I live in southwest florida if that makes any difference on cost of repairs. And any suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Once you pull the head you'll know more about the possible cost. We may have a problem finding you a good service guy who will work on that motor (4 stroke Suzuki) but there are some pretty good rebuilders in SW Fla.

The last mechanic charged me $300 bucks just to tell me that. He obviously didn't pull apart the head but i'm glad I stopped him. He was already throwing $3500 for the powerhead plus the labor which he said would take several hours, not including the possible bent rods and anything else. In the end he tried telling me I should buy an new engine. Of course he was quick to call a buddy that sells engines up and try to sell me a $7000 engine plus labor of course. I just don't want to get another one of these kind of people working on my boat and trying to stick it to me.

Hi,
What was the reason you took the motor to the shop? What was the symptoms? Were you loosing oil? How many miles on the motor? did you got the regular timing belt change done? There is so many questions needs to be answered.. You can borrow a compression tester froman autozone and you can do the test yourself? Make sure you take the fuse off for ignition and all the spark plugs are off and full throttle and crank the engine.. And post the numbers..In 4 stroke engine there is lots of reason for a cylinder having no compression as simple as stuck rings...i believe we ned more info ..

His engine has timing chain, no belt.

The reason I got it looked at was because I was out on it and it shut off and didn't start again. When the mechanic came out to look at it he got it to start and it would on stay running above 2000 rpm. I had been told by the previous mechanic that the boat had gotten water in the fuel. He then proceded to remove all the fuel clean the fuel filter, lines and put in a filter to keep it from happening again. He never cleaned the injectors though which I had done next. The boat still wouldn't start until the last mechanic to look at it checked it out. I did sit with him while he checked the compression and saw for myself 205 compression in every cylinder except for the last one that had none. The engine has about 80 hours on It if i'm not mistaken. The boat has very little use. Maybe that's part of the problem. It had a service less than a year ago and everything else seemed to be in order. Until it shut off when I was on it.
