I just drove 4 hours to check out a boat. I went over it carefully and I see two issues. One issue is bigger than the other.

1) Keel near the bow is missing some gelcoat and I can see the fiber glass. About a 6" x1" are, maybe from beaching the boat?

2) The deckboard that inpregnated in fiberclass in the fore deck going from in front of the ski locker forward to the open bow is rotted. I took two videos and it looks like someone removed the table mount to straiten it and put a 2nd set of screws in it w/o putting any sealent of any type. The rot has to have originated from the table mount. This had me confused as the rest of the deck and transom sounded solid. I was able to access the fore deck from the bildge/ski locker. The only saving grace is that it looks like the rotted piece of wood is an isolated piece that was encapsulated in the deck, before the deck was mounted to the hull. I am not an expert by any means, but I think this piece is isolated from the other wood and it looks like it might be able to be removed from the bottom of the bildge and have a new piece of wood inserted in its place.

I have been looking for a larger boat like this and most are a few hours away. I know many would say to walk, though I am wondering what a fair counter would be to cover the deck replacement, the enconvience, and a little extra for assurance. If the rot was in the main deck, stringers, or transom this would kill the deal. He originally asked for $25,600, I negociated him down to $24k, though that is before I found the foredeck issue. Attached are videos, what are your thoughts?

So did you end up buying the boat? And was issue resolved?
I passed. He didn't seem to interested in coming down in price, even if he did I would have still been hesitant on the purchased. It would have taken a lot of time or money to fix that boat to what I was looking for.

The silver lining in this is that I ended up buying my old mans boat, granted I had to ship it 1400 miles. Though It is a much newer and nice boat.

I can't get over the exposed wood that I see in the guts of Chaparral boats. (as can be seen in the video). Maybe that lets the wood get rid of its moisture, as opposed to encapsulated wood, but there must be a better way.

I was thinking of buying a 327 SSX, but the cabin design was n ot Admiral approved, so I never looked deeper into the 'guts'.
