2003 5.7 gxi Volvo penta seems to go into safe mode with no alarm

Wondering why it would seem to go into safe mode without an alarm. One injector stops and boat backfires stalls. Easy to re start, plugs running whiteish so lean, fuel pump at 30 psi steady. Any thoughts please, I am also new , so please bear with me if I am posting wrong. Thank you

Do yourself a favor and get a code reader. I put a Fox Marine gateway on my 2001 5.7GXi-A and now have access to all the MEFI3 parameters in real-time on my phone. One way, but not the only way, to get to diagnostic stuff need top troubleshoot your problem.

Thank you Kosmofreeze, I looked into the unit you mentioned talked more about dashboard stuff like a comparison, does it read your sensors?. I was at boat today and did find the wire off of oil pressure switch that I believe sends info to ecm. Will take it out later to try.

The Fox gateway allows you to read any/all sensors that the ECM uses to control the fuel injection. It depends on which generation of ECM/MEFI you have as to whether or not oil pressure will be included. On my older MEFI-3, oil pressure is not included in the standard MEFI-3 parameters. (Fox does have a gateway mod that adds the oil pressure in the case of MEFI-3) I believe oil pressure is a standard MEFI-4 parameter. Give Fox a call - they can provide the specifics.

Update- changed spark plug wires as a matter of maintenance. Disconnected temp and oil pressure switches to ecu. Biat hunted a little at idle then settled down. Took out and was able to get it plane , but not go past 3000 rpm. When you try to push past it just stops giving gas and backfire. The low pressure pump started to whine, now wondering if that has been the issue all along. Temp was normal on a laser temp gauge. Oil pressure ok on dash gauge. Will look into a fuel pump unit

Sargetreetrunck, a couple of thoughts: if you changed up the wires, should also do the rotor and cap unless new recently.
And if suspect the fuel pump, which these circa pumps have paint issues, check out this link.

ESG, thank you. Cap and rotor done just before launching this year. They were corroded. Had the HP out and as gas drained may have dislodged and paint, the low pressure pump started to whine but was not hot to touch.while watching tbi injectors once on plane at 3000 rpm the injectors seemed to run out of gas, if throttle back it may stay running. I am thinking of a new fuel pump unit. Although this trip after wire change boat finally got up on plane ( huge improvement)

I assume your 30 PSI fuel pump pressure was taken while idling and sitting at the dock, correct? Flow requirements are minimal at idle compared to 4500 RPM. Its possible you are not getting the flow (volume) needed at 3000 RPM and higher which seems to you as if in ‘safe mode’. Your lean (whitish) plugs seem to indicate lack of fuel. And easy to restart since not needing that much flow.

Restricted flow could be from a bad or contaminated fuel pump. And here are some other causes:
  • Clogged (not completely) fuel filter; note a slightly loose one will cause the pump to suck air and thus run out of fuel, so make sure its tight.
  • Your fuel pickup (in the tank) may have a screen on the bottom of it that is clogging up. A lot of older pickups have this screen.
  • There is an anti-siphon valve at the top of the tank prior to hooking onto the fuel hose. This one-way check valve prevents the fuel line from draining back into the tank (if it did you would have a hard time starting each time and eventually burn out the pump). These siphon valves can also get ‘sticky’ and block flow intermittently, starving the fuel pump.
  • The fuel line itself can deteriorate over time and the inside lining starts to degrade to the point where it collapses (internally) causing a blockage (with no external signs of an issue).
  • And there may be a kink or pinch in the fuel line that is not obvious.
  • And the tank could not be venting.
But the most suspect ones are fuel pump and anti-siphon valve.

Suggest you do this: with a 2nd person on the boat, hook back up the fuel pressure gauge. Place it somehow so it can be monitored and not get in the way of spinning parts. Go for a ride. If get up to about 3000 RPM and the pressure starts to drop, well now we know where to start looking.

Try this test and post results and we’ll go from there…

I though with disconnecting the oil and temp switches it would eliminated the ecu going to safe mode. The temp was very good on laser type temp checker On both engine and exhaust

Oh yes a new pick up was installed same time as anti siphon valve. The stuff they install the anti siphon valve with omg, so it broke off and had to replace the tube also

Ah, got it, pressure test at speed already done 😊. And other potential issues addressed. So now it’s into the computer as you suspect. Only thing I can think of is to use a test light hooked into the backside of the injector plug and seeing that the signal to fire the injectors ‘goes away’ or diminishes when hit that 3000 threshold would defiantly point back to the ECM. I have never done this so unsure if there is sensitivity to the resistance of the light or needing to be a led or some such to preclude harm to the ECM. Best to get the appropriate ECM diagnostic tool. Other than that, I cannot help further, sorry.

Thank you again, scanners not cheap in Canada, we have a way to go to get it hooked up for scan. We at the end of season, will recommend trailer to the marina about $120 to get that done. Just funny that the pump started to whine after our get onto plane run. But if throttle back it will not stall. Thanks again

Ok here was the answer “fuel pump” changed the entire unit. I guess one clue was the plugs showing lean condition. The tricky part of diagnosing was the fuel just seeming to shutoff at injectors. Made us think ecu for a while also fuel pressure held at 30 psi. But thinking back to lean looking plugs and finally getting a whine from pump sealed the deal. Thanks all
