Trying to help a buddy. He has a 5.7 idles good but as soon as you throttle up, in water or on ear muffs engine just dies. Carburator was rebuilt and had zero affect. Is it possible timing is off? Any ideal appreciated.

go back to the carb. My guess is something is not right or overlooked during the carb rebuild. is this a Holley 2-barrel or a Holley 4-barrel?

it is the Holley 2 barrel. He said there was zero change. Boat engine was replaced. New distributor (MSD) and carb put back on and never touched. then once it died when trying to rev he "rebuilt" carb found crap in jets. That what is surprising is he said zero change. You would think with the jets now clean there would be some difference

If you do not chase every passage with a bit of fishing line or fine wire to ensure its clean, there may be "zero change" because the passages are still plugged

Questions:
does this engine have a proper water separating fuel filter? Is there junk in the gas tank? Is the accelerator pump functioning?

fuel is old, and I agree a contributor but it dies immediately with no stumble. I agree he probably half assssed the carb rebuild. such a simple engine what else could it be. does have water seperating filter and it is new.

Run it on a separate tank with new gas , but if he half azzed the rebuild then nothing was accomplished rebuilding it. Does he know how to rebuild a carb properly set float and needle and seat? If no gas is getting into bowl due to float needle seat issues then it would die.. especially if you can't rev it under no load

These were my thoughts as well. should be able to look into the bowl, move the throttle by hand, and see fuel come out through the squirters. That would show that the accelerator pump is set up properly.
The float height is externally adjustable if the bowl has a window or a level screw that you can set it by. My 2 bbl didn't have either, so it had to be set with the bowl off of the carb.

There are lots of YouTube vids about Holley carbs. I learned a ton by watching them. They explain what everything does.

They are pretty easy to rebuild and tune, they have been using the same basic modular design for more than a half century and have very good aftermarket support.

If all else fails try checking the tiny wires that go to the pick up coil, some times the will separate slightly when the timing try's to advance
