2002 Johnson 175 After shutting off won't restart

I have twin 175's. Each engine starts initially and runs fine. After I turn the engines off, the port engine will not restart immediately. It turns over, but will not catch. I have tried choking and not choking during separate occurrences. I'm guessing it is a spark plug issue or carbs? If I let the port engine sit for about 30 mins it will restart. Any thoughts? It is a naturally aspirated 2-stroke.

Thanks,
Ted

I replaced the plugs and tightened the all connections on the fuel line, Oil, Etc. I ran it for 15 minutes and then it cut out. Same thing, it would turnover but not catch. I opened the throttle in neutral and tried to start it to see if it was flooded but no luck. It just turned over. Any thoughts before I just take it to the shop?

Does the motor fire up at all or is it just dead?

On reading your 2nd post again I see that it cut out after running for 15 minutes. Check that you have spark when it doesn't start. If not, could be a heat related problem in your optical ignition sensor or powerpack.

You can use a hot air gun (carefully) or hair dryer to heat up these components to see if you can get them to fail.

I had the extact problem - this is what I did to isolate the problem:

1. checked idle speed setting - this was OK on mine
2. checked the carburetor throttle plate linkage and engine timing advance, a procedure known as "sync and link;" - This was OK on mine
3. checked the throttle cam roller to insure it was intact - This roller was intact and GOOD condition
4. Checked for a "vacuum leak" - this procedure is done by spraying WD40 in carburetor joint, Crank case joint and then the head gasket joint. This is done one at a time - If there is leakage then you RPM's will increase. Therefore you'll have to fix the leak - NO LEAK FOUND.
5. Lastly, Checked compression and plugs. WELL - here was the problem - compression was good. I had one wrong plug which brunt the ignition coil. Therefore, the solution was the replace the wrong plug and ignition coil clean and gap the remaining plugs.

You can also speak to Johnson technical support line. Customer Support Services at 847-689-7090 they have also been a great help..

Good luck!!!
