Hi this is my first post so excuse me if I make a mistake .I own a 2002 long shaft 2 stroke mariner outboard that is playing up .
The engine will start ist time every time and run perfectly until I have gone 5 miles then as I throttle down it starts to run very lumpy sort of coughing if you like .Then the engine will start up again but as soon as you give it any revs it just dies .IF you can build the revs up and get it in gear it will run long enough to get me home .
I should add that ive only had this happen to me twice the first time when I broke down and then when I had hoped to have solved the problem .
I have a good friend who is very good with engines so we striped the carb down , everything seemed as it should no dirt or blockages .
We also checked for broken fuel pipes and electrical cables they all seemed good .We changed the plugs for new ones and checked the spark which was fine . Also did a compression test that was also good and changed the fuel tank .
The problem seemed to be fuel related or so we thought but when it happened again we started to think maybe a crank shaft oil seal ?
Any comments or ideas would be very much appreciated as im at a loss as to what to try next .
Thanks
Steve

The problem may be as simple as proper adjustment of low speed mixture.----If they are set too lean the motor will stumble on acceleration.------Old fuel or water in the fuel will also be a problem.

Is the vent open on the fuel tank?
