My thoughts . . .

- That is a big/heavy boat for a single engine, even a 7.4 . . . So, lots of load on the outdrive/engine.
- Being a 2001 . . . probably 310 HP and running the MEFI-3 controller
- I tend to agree maybe more the outdrive rather than the coupler. If it were the coupler, I'd expect it to fail more completely and quickly.
- The clutch is in the top of the drive, and if you are loosing gear oil, then the clutch could be burning/glazing.

I'd pull the drive and see what you discover . .
Thanks for your thoughts. To the naked eye what will the clutch look like if burnt? I read that I can look shiny.

Thanks, I will take the clutch apart and find out what’s going on. I read that the clutch can have a shiny glaze when burnt. Is this true? Also where the clutch engages with the gear would there be any damages? In other word do I need to replace the entire set up or just the clutch?

The clutch can be glazed, but it may not look all that bad. Post some pictures when you have it out.

It should look something like this . . .
