Hi all. First time poster.

My 2001 model Johnno recently picked up a plastic bag on the leg and the overheat alarm went off & the RPM dropped. I killed the motor within a few seconds of the alarm and let it cool down. When I restarted there was no water coming out the telltale so I immediately shut it down and got a tow back.

When I called my mechanic & told me my story he was immediately concerned. He said my make and model of motor is flawed and by the time the alarm goes off the motor has serious damage.

Sure enough the motor has lost compression and needs a powerhead rebuild. This is verified by the insurance assessor.

My question to the forum is:
Do Johnson outboards have an issue/flaw with the overheat alarm going off when it's too late?

Surely the point of an oveheat alarm is to prevent damage to the motor???

The only flaw with the alarm is the fact that it is not a failsafe alarm (system) as well as coupled with the fact that your cooling water failure was an extreme and immediate total loss of inlet water while running. The system is designed to lower rpm to prevent a catastrophic failure.Obviously in some situations as mentioned above ,it is not a bulletproof failsafe.I'd be interested in knowing whether Bombardier has revised the temp alarm set point to a lower figure than original.I'm not positive but I was thinking the original factory set point was around 190 F.How many rpm were you turning when the event occured?
