have a 2001 ficht 225 hp spits and tries to start but won't completely start. New batteries, new water seperator, new plugs, ( gapped and indexed) ... did not change fuel filter... I did something to get it running that I probably shouldn't have, but it's too late now. I mixed gas/oil and misted the mixture into the six throttle ports to see if it was getting fuel. ( don't scream ) it probably wasn't a good idea. Anyway, the engine started, idled, reved with no problem. Shut engine off after a couple minutes and once again, engine wouldn't start. So I did the same process as before and it started. This time I let it run for 20 minutes and shut it down. I tried to re-start it and it ran fine. This morning I tried to start it and it went back to the same old sputtering and not wanting to start. Any help would be appreciated.... Thanks in advance

Spraying premix thru the throttle body ports shouldn't cause any problems at all. Not sure about the rest of the starting problem. Clearly, there's something wrong how the engine (ECU?) handles a cold start.

It's driving me crazy.... Problem is I cant find an oem service manual. There must be a starting fuel pump involved somehow??????

Have you tried Ebay? The diagnostic sw might help as well.

When you first turn the key on with the hood off can you hear the high pressure fuel pump run for about 10 seconds?? Every time the key is turned on??

The temp is between 65-70 I forgot to mention that the boat is on a trailer. Strangely enough, I have a 2005 225 ficht that starts without a problem thus ruling out ambient temperature. Things may be different on that engine because it was made by BRP....

Check your battery voltage at cranking. Cold cranking pulls more AMP than warm cranking. If your voltage drops to far, engine will not start as ECM shuts down! Fully charge your battery, it should hold 12,5-8 unloaded fully charged, Dropping to around 10,5Volts at cranking and your ECM shuts down.

Thanks, I checked some old threads and your suggestion was the same as the old one's. I installed 2 new batteries ( 1000's ) and have tremendious cranking power. I did read about a sensor that tells the ecm the injectors are too cold...... I apologize but don't have a manual and have no idea what sensor the past thread was talking about? As I said in a past comment, I didn't change the fuel filter under the hood... could this be a logical solution to my issue???? I guess one of my main questions is.... why does the engine start right away when I mist the throttle ports?? After about 6 hrs. the darn thing won't fire.

Re: 2001 ficht 225 hp cold starting

What happens is that your injectors does not get enough Amps to inject the needed amount of fuel.
Is Voltage too low, or is your cold start system not working, ECM, that increases the amount of fuel to be injected (Automatic choke)?
Check sensor #32

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...rer=Evinrude&section=Cylinder+&+Crankcase

As the injectors functions by grounding in the ECM, check and clean all ground connection.

If you got the Diagnostic software, hook it up and read off the sensors both air and engine temp that they read correct.

Great info...Thanks. I was looking into the software, but from what I read it only works on certain Windows systems. My laptop has Windows Vista. Would you possibly know if my laptop is compatible with the software?? Thanks again....

Is a DOS software. Know it works in XP, not sure about Vista, that came after I used it(the software) and I'm still running XP!!
If you got a DOS prompt, try run it from there.
You got the software on CD or floppy?
The originals were on floppy, but around 2003 they even came on CD and a Palm version that worked on older models.

Re: 2001 ficht 225 hp cold starting

Let me fill you in on a little secret. The 225 evinrude will not start unless the computer module sees 500+ cranking amps while it is starting. I have had a battery on constant charging (onboard charger) and the motor would turn wonderfully, but wouldn't hit a lick. This is the sign of a weak battery. Not weak to turn the motor, but weak to tell the ecm that it has a sufficient battery. Put a new battery in and it fired up on first turn. It amazes me that this is this engines setup. Motor turns like crazy but no fire. I have a 2001 225hp evinrude. Hope this helps. By the way, I read other post on battery amps. I had a brand new battery on my boat, got down to ramo in a tournament and motor would not start. Jumped to new trolling motor battery and it cranked right up. Cranking battery would start rest of day because motor charger would keep it maxed out.

i can confirm from my 150 ficht that this engine needs tremndeneous juice from the battery at a cold start. i have a brand new battery installed and when cold it seems that this battery is at it absolut limit to start the engine. finally of course the ficht with electronic fuel injection should start and idle by turning the key, no pumping, priming etc is required.

Re: 2001 ficht 225 hp cold starting

I forgot to mention that when I had the boat at the tournament and it would not start, jumping it off the trolling motor worked and engine cranked rest of day. But this battery had been on constant charge from the onboard charging bank. Yet the battery would not start the engine. Battery is a 1.3 year old stowaway, 1000 cranking amps. Called the exide people and she said sounds like it has a weak cell. I had a backup battery from before and charged it and it cranks right up. Apparently the engine alternator puts out a lot of charging juice. That would explain why it cranks rest of day. I just know from experience that when she's turning but no "pop" I am wasting my time. I too tried injecting fuel into sparkplug hole and got it to start, but not everytime and finally got stuck on the lake. Took it back to dealer I bought it from, called me three days later to pick up. Asked what the problem was they said they put a new battery in it. Lesson learned.
