I recently purchased a party barge with a 2001 mercury 75 hp. The motor had been set up for 3 yrs thus the carbs had tarnished. I pulled the carbs and fuel pump off and professionally cleaned the carbs. Items changed: complete carb kits, complete fuel pump kit, water pump and housing, new fuel hoses and filter, new spark plugs.
Once this was done, the motor was ran in a barrel which proved positive. Once the boat was put in the water, the motor ran fine up till approximately 3/4 throttle. The motor made a noise similar to that of a piston bangging out and quit running immediately. I checked the fuel bulb and it was hard which proved plenty of fuel. The motor started right back up as if nothing had happened. I checked linkages etc but found nothing out of place. I took the boat home and performed a compression test { with engine at operating temp } and found that the top 2 cylinders were 100 psi and the lower cylinder was 90 psi.
I pulled the plugs and found nothing out of the norm. All plugs were same color, so again, nothing out of the norm there.
Engine: 1075412YN
Any suggestions or pointers would be much appreciated!
Tks James
