ive recently purchased a new boat which runs a 2001 70hp 2stroke johnson motor.. i took it out for a sea trial and everything seemed to be runnin ok, good starting plenty of power up on the plane no problems untill the oil alarm sounded. knocked it back to neutral and checked the oil container. it did seem a bit low so i topped it right up. started it up again, oil alarm stayed off and had no more incidents that day...following day went out again same thing happened after about 20 min of runnin..i thought this motors really eating the oil so i checked the oil container again..but the container was still full. i did notice that the engine was smoking quite a bit(blue smoke)took the boat home and flushed out with fresh water and now the alarm keeps coming on after about 5 minutes of running....anyone have any ideas as to what this might be? is it possible to disconnect the oil container and pre-mix my own fuel? motor seems to be running ok and is not over heating

A steady beep and if engine will run at any speed is indication of a fuel restriction alarm. If tone was steady and engine would not operate above 2500 rpm would denote an overheat alarm.

My recommendation is that you inspect/clean the fuel tank pickup tube and fuel line filter. Also insure all fuel connections are secure and leak free and fuel tank is venting properly.

Re: 2001 70HP JOHNSON(PROBLEM)

have taken onboard sum of the imformation thats been showen to me from this forum..have inspected all the fuel lines inside and outside the motor.. all the fuel lines outside the motor running from the fuel tank to the to the motor appear to be ok no cracks or leaks. however on the inside of the motor i did notice a small amount of what looks like and smells like oil mix on the underside of what i think is the vro where the (oil and fuel) lines plug into the bottom of the unit.. is this normal? ive also inspected the fuel tank and it has a screw venting system on top of the cap so it should be venting propally. ive inspected the battery cables every thing seems nice and tight there. i also ran the motor again this time starting a stopwatch from the time it fired up..after 10 seconds of running the oil alarm and light sounded and remained a steady beep for 10 seconds and switched off but the light remained on for a further 2.5 minutes before switching off altogether. i repeated this test a few times and the results varied from time to time but one thing remained the same and the was how long the alarm sounded for....10 seconds everytime... also the engine seemed to be smoking alot (blue smoke)still even after warming up. water coming out the tell tail is luke warm not overheating at all... hope this sheds alot more light on the situation....

If it is the NO OIL lite coming on, then you may have an oil pump problem, an oil delivery problem, or just a malfunctioning alarm system.

Use a service manual procedures to test the oil flow, oil alarm, and priming sytems of your motor. Check all connections, bleed the oil line, and make sure you are using factory hoses and clamps.

Do a test of your charging system also as the alternator (gray wire) signal goes to the "VRO" and tells it the rpm of the motor to the alarm circutry at the back of the pump.
