Hit a partially submerged log last weekend and it snapped the power tilt shaft from the upper mounting hub. Can this be welded back together, or do I need to replace the entire unit?

Model is M50D2 3E3

Had some time today and attempted to remove the tilt unit with no luck. The top pin is either pressed in or seized and I have no idea about the lower mounting bolt which has two threaded ends and as best I can tell is installed with the two lower mounting sections apart.

Found a used replacement unit but would like to see if I can repair this one.

There is both an early and newer TT unit, depending on serial number. If you snapped the push rod, you will probably need a replacement unit. Push rod seals are NLA, so if you overheat one while trying to weld, you are done with that TT unit. Exactly what part snapped? Do you have a picture or two?

Hi Paul,

The attached picture shows the shaft separated from the upper attachment point. I know some excellent welders that will make sure the shaft doesn't overheat or get splatter from the weld. My issue know is how do you remove the tilt motor from the engine. Can it be removed with the motor on the boat?

Thanks for the help. tilt-2.JPG

The lower TT cylinder pin is threaded on each end, and has a sleeve tube (called a collar in the parts catalog) over it between the clamp frames. Depending on the corrosion, you can remove one of the nuts, and with a proper drift pin, drive the shaft out.

Can't believe that is a sleeve! No wonder it wasn't moving. I didn't try heating the sleeve (which I thought was the bolt) but really doubt that bolt is coming out. Same with the pin on the top, we were putting some solid hits with a 5lb hammer and it didn't budge. I found a used replacement pump and am thinking it will be easier to buy new pins, bolts and bushings (if they are still available) and just cut the pins. Was this engine designed for fresh water use only?

Thanks again for all your help.

After 15 years in salt, any OB will have some corrosion.

Will add lots of bolt seizures everywhere no matter how well that OB was flushed or rinsed after use. Are real Pandora Boxes right before you tear them apart.. Apply a good water grease when assembling parts back.

Was able to get the upper pin out with a big hammer and a clamp. It was badly corroded but was able to salvage and reuse it. Used a cutoff wheel to cut the lower pin, which didn't look bad but would budge with the hammer. My used lift pump came with a lower pin with the sleeve firmly rusted on, but I was able to cobble up a custom spacer to get it back together. Ordered a new upper pin and bussing, but the lower pin and sleeve are NLA.

Is it possible to have both fabricated at a machine shop ? Depending on size and diam could fabricate pin cutting the rear side of a SS drill bit to required lenght.
