Changed fuel lines, the boats been sitting around 3 to 4 months and never had an issue with it not idling. All the sudden i try and start it with muffs and it wont idle

Is the Safety Cord switch connected correctly ? Was it running fine for a long time ?

Had the boat 2 or 3 years, usually take it out only in winter time for duck hunting which it typically gets to 20s to 40s in winter months, today it was in the 80s and the boat had been sitting for about 3 or 4 months, always had trouble idling when it was winter as any 2 stroke would. Changed the fuel line because the other one was deteriorating on the inside. Hooked the muffs up and pulled it a few times and it fired but wont idle at all until i put it in gear and give it throttle. Never cleaned the carb and im trying to avoid it due to half of the motor having to be pulled out in order to get to the bolts on the carb. Selling it this week but i want to make sure its running before i do so.

Think that proves it....a spec of fuel hose that you missed upon removing it. If you can get to the float bowl drain screw and remove the idle circuit screw, sometimes you can blast it backwards with compressed air.

Otherwise, you know what you'll have to do. Damn 9.9/15 are a time burner removing that stuff.

Change the sparkplugs first. They are probably black with soot. Set the gap to ,035" to about .040" NAPA sells a simple cheap easy to use Gapping Tool.

Waters in the 30s which keeps the motor cold, usually when its first started after i run it wide open and the motor gets hot its fine. Normal for 2 strokes to not like the cold. Same concept with a diesel motor cold starting

They warm up quickly if thermostat is installed and working properly.----There is no reason for them to not like the cold !

My 30 hp can not warm up correctly. I will be doing my 4 th Thermostat and the crappy RUBBER GASKET that does not operate correctly. Every time I find the gasket not reseated correctly. So fouling sparkplugs are the result. This time I will glue the gasket to the large body of the thermostat with RTV Silicone adhesive very carefully & neatly. It will seal the water flow until the 143 F Thermostat opens up correctly. Will also prevent the rapid black build up on the sparkplugs. That requires a 1 mile run at WOT. To clean them and stop misfiring of the plugs.
Oh well. (y)

Hey cyclops,

Changed out my used working ignition coils this weekend on my 1985 30 HP Johnson.

Started better, idled better and my Chinese (wrap the wire around the plug wire) tach worked all the way to 5000 RPMs. It wouldn't read over 2500 before.

40 some years ago my auto shop teacher said all coils loose power when they get old.

Did wonders for me.

Thought you might want to know.

Another use for the Timing Light Gun.
It SHOULD ALWAYS flash steadily at all speeds !! If you move the clip on part to each plug wire ??? It should ALWAYS have a steady same intensity flashing light. I carefully tape on the clip on part to the ignition cable. MAKE SURE the clip is FULLY CLOSED !!!!! If not ? It MIGHT flash erratically. This checking while running..........MUST ....... be done with 2 careful people. It is a excellent way to test for generating sparks. The sparkplugs........ MUST .....be brand new and gapped to the correct width. A blackened sparkplug WILL WILL give a good flashing light. Do not forget to have new plugs in the engine. This testing will give you some good confidence about the electrical system.
