Converting to raw as engine is old and not worth dumping $ into - suspecting HE blockage. Planning to put in large 2" hose from raw pump OUT to tstat IN and bypass the HE entirely. just not sure if the closed tstat housing differs from raw tstat housing - seemed to recall a bypass variance but not 100% sure..

Found this on abother thread - i tried a direct cooled tstat in the closed housing and it opened but motor overheated, then i removed it entirely and motor still over heated - i rebuilt raw pump and have excellent raw flow - manifolds are cool, but block is cooking.

  • Direct cooled engines 60°C / 62°C Volvo Part number 877355
  • Fresh cooled engines 74°C Volvo Part number 875795

yes, the thermostat housings are vastly differnt

the thermostat housing in a heat exchanged motor does not circulate anything to the exhaust. that is handled by the heat exchanger

the thermostat housing in a raw water cooled motor uses the thermostat as a mixing valve and always has flow to the exhaust.

On most heat exchangers you can remove the end caps and run an appropriately sized rod through the raw water tubes to clear them out. If you can do that, that should get it cooling enough.

only way that happened is if the HX was put on a used motor, or the EG wasnt maintained.
