Hey guys... I know this has been discussed before but I am still getting conflicting stories from my local dealer on wether I can actually buy just the universal joints for my 2000 SX-M outdrive.

The dealer says I have to buy the whole shaft with universals and my local guy said he couldn't get anything to match so replaced with the closest uv's and shimed the joints which was supposed to be ok but now getting a slight knocking at almost full turns?? has to be the universals... gimbal is new also.

volvo doesn't list a part number for just universal but as a whole shaft? But online here I found the part number 3850812 and also a sierra part number that says it will work????

Can anyone confirm that these will actually replace the original universals?? thanks for any help..

You need to look at the ujoints you have now and determine which type you have, then order the ones you need.

My clips go on the inside of the yoke- aka the uv does not protrude out a little from the yoke.. so the number i found is the same as the one you guys supplied.. thanks a lot!!

I am just confused as to why my mechanic who is very experienced wouldn't know you can get the universals from sierra... anyway will order a couple and let you know how I made out!

This site always has the right info! best out there!!

Most OEM (Volvo) dealers don't sell aftermarket parts. That is what the independents that aren't dealers sell.
You don't see Chevy dealers picking up parts at the local auto parts and re-selling them do you?

I know if I took my boat to a certified Volvo dealer and they stuck a bunch of aftermarket parts on my engine or drive, I would be pissed and wanting to know why. I wouldn't have went to a Volvo dealer if I didn't want OEM parts.

Actually he is an independant shop and took my original uv to a uv dealer and measured lots to see if he could find a replacement and ended up with ones that fit but needed a shim on each side as they were a little short.. this was supposed to work but I have a small knocking noise at half turns that wasn't there before.... my local volvo dealer charges ridiculous labor and parts!

I hope the new ones get rid of the knocking...

thanks for the help

no such thing as shimming a ujoint.
cheap is just that, you get what you paid for.
use the correct parts and it fits.
thats why NO marine manufactuerer offers ANY ujoint shims.
some techs are christmas turkeys that take money.
we see it here on a daily basis.
mobile techs that have big tool boxes and no brains.
but they make me about 20K a year so I dont complain.
look at the tech bulliten Volvo has on the Ujoints for the SX drive, then consult your attorney on the liability if you charged someone to install the joints and something happened.\
I wonder if seirra would help pay my attorneys fees in a lawsuit.
remember, some of us actually do this for a living.
if volvo has a bulliten and we dont follow it and something happens we are hung with no recourse.
trust me the judge wont care when the other attorney shows the bulliten and the work order shows something else.

Here is a copy of the Volvo service bulletin on those ujoints. Basically, Volvo doesn't sell the individual ujoint parts (other than the spiders) seperately any longer, only as a kit.
The new kits for ALL the Volvo drives use the new type spiders (3860232).
They even give the new part number for the spiders only on the last paragraph on page 2 of the bulletin.

^ Or now search online ( Parts Bulletin Group Number Version P-44-1 5 02 ).

I was not impressed with the shims either and they will be coming out asap when i order the new ujoints or now that I have read this probably a new shaft assembly... it was a fix last season as nobody could find a u joint for the drive appearently and even my local volvo dealer was saying 3 weeks before they could look at it... we only get a 8 week boating season so I was not willing to wait.. anyway I appreciate the help and found a "like new" sx assembly on ebay for $80 this morning... hopefully this will do the job.

Well... I messed up I guess... and ordered the wrong u joints. I needed outside keepers and got inside ones by mistake but my mechanic installed them not knowing they were wrong. He said they were pretty tight going in and they are pretty stiff now installed

Is there a diameter difference in the cap between the 18-2174(inside keeper) and the uv with outside keepers?? They went in the yoke and the clips are installed but I am worried about how stiff the shafts are.

Can the ujoints be interchanged?? I am totally frustrated at this point thinking I ruined two ujoints and now have to order the right ones and install again....

You might consider talking to your mechanic to see if he will get u-joints at an auto parts store. I've never heard of any difference between marine and auto u-joints, and they look the same to me. U-joints work well for what they do, but they aren't exactly cutting edge technology.

I just did the u-joints on my 1999 SX-M drive, and I bought new u-joints at a local autoparts store (Federated auto parts) using the part numbers found in the sticky referenced above. They had a stack of them there and only cost $11 each. The sticky doesn't have a part number for autozone (I checked there first) because autozone sells its own house brands (Duralast).
