2000 Volvo 5.0 stalled

5.0 Volvo with carb and single prop

We were running for a few hours on the river, no problem. After a 30 min break, we started skiing again, and the engine stalled and would not restart. This was the first time out this season. The gas was fresh last fall and the tank is near full. I removed the canister fuel filter and poured the gas into a glass, no water, just clean gas.

I thought maybe it was vapor lock, but days later the engine will not start. I don't have the tools to diagnose the fuel system, but I read many posts about the fuel pump on this model.

Is there more than one fuel pump? If so, where are they located?

Do you think I should replace the electric fuel pump, which I can do myself, or take it to the dealer for diagnosis first?

Carb VP only have one pump. They do sometimes fail (like anything) but they are not cheap (~200 dollars) and there is certainly other things that would do that. Don S has done a great service to the world and posted all the factory manuals here on this site. If you have a test light (or even better, a multi meter) and basic mechanical knowledge you can start trouble shooting. If not then time for a pro.

Thanks, yes I have a multi-meter and some basic mechanical skills. Is there a section or posting where the details of testing the electric fuel pump are located?

You may have a 2000 boat, but it's probably not what the engine is.
Do you have a full model number or even a SN for the engine. Then, I can link you to the proper manual for finding the problem.
May be nothing more than a relay, not that expensive pump.

The engine serial number is 4012011738 model number 3869056.

The pump gets the +12V power from the starter solenoid when cranking and the alternator when engine is running. Like Don said, download manual and start testing.
