Posting for a friend I fish with, My isssue is still with 200 merc

I have a year 2000 model 125 HP merc classic. On the average I use the motor twice a week on short (five -- ten mile) trips. About a month ago after running idle speed for a while, the motor started to labor and sound like it was about to die. I found the primer bulb to be empty and just prior to the motor stopping I refreshed it's appetite and it ran well that evening. I initially suspected a problem with the built in fuel tank / lines / water separator. I replaced lines / water separator but the problem continued. I was convinced that it could not be the newer motor so I purchase a six gallon tank so that I could completely eliminate the built-in fuel tank. Same problem. My warrantee expired a few months back. Any ideas on a probable problem? I have not replaced anything on the motor itself. I have received some suggestions that my fuel pump diaphragm may have a problem but I do not want to blindly start replacing good parts. I also do not want to damage the motor any more than I may have already due to running lean. Suggestions? Thanks!

Capt Greedy Bob
