2000 Johnson Cutting out

Runs great 20-30 minutes at 4000+ RPM. Then like clock work motor starts to hesitate like it is running out of fuel. Will run fine at 2500 and below after that. No alarms. Cooling system operational already pulled and check water pump. Have not replaced thermostats yet. One idea I have heard is the stator getting hot at high end. Has anyone heard of stator problems with this model? Is the SLOW activating? If so how can I check? Lot's of questions has anyone experienced and repaired this problem?

First off, what motor are we talking about?

It does sound like SLOW is getting activated.

1. Verify the engine is not actually over-heating by using a digital pyrometer or an infrared thermometer.
2. Check the routing of the tan temperature wires. The tan wires have to be located as far away as possible from the spark plug wires.

It is the 90 HP V4 60 degree.

Your S.L.O.W. function reduces the engine RPM to approximately 2500 when the engine over-heats or the no oil warning is activated. Is it shaking when the RPMs are reduced? Is the oil level low? Can you hold your hand on the head for a 1,2,3 count with ease, or will water sizzle when splashed on the head?

Check the oil level, then verify the engine is not overheating and disconnect the Tan temperature sensor wire. If the engine now performs as it should, check both temp sensors and replace as needed. If there is not any indication of a problem at this point, it is likely that you need to replace the power pack.

I haven't noticed any shaking. It acts exactly like it is not getting enough fuel with th throttle wide open. It will even rev up like it was running perfectly for a second or two and then die back down. I have to pull the throttle back down to 2000 and below and it runs fine. The plug tips look like they may have a little excessive oil on them.
Is it possible the mix is getting more oil than it should built up after running for a while? Those pointers to check for overheating sounds like a good plan.
