2000 Johnson 115hp speedometer pitot question

I recently bought a pontoon with a 2000 Johnson 115hp (J115PLSIF). The speedometer doesnt work and I traced the speedometer line back to the motor. The line does not hook to the motor but is laying loose at the transom. After extensive research of the web and a service manual, I cannot seem to find where the pitot tube is on my motor. I wonder if it even has one? I dont believe the pontoon ever had a plastic pitot like you see on bass boats. Unless this is a different motor then I would believe the speedometer had to be hooked to it at some time.

My service manual shows several exploded views of lower units but none of them show a pitot. Another exploded view that I found on the web (Johnson Gearcase - 90 And 115 Pl, Spl, And Vl Models Parts for 2000 115hp J115PLSSB Outboard Motor) does, but does not show where it goes. :frusty:

I have pulled off the lower unit to see if I could find anything but did not. I am thinking its possible that the pitot tube is completely missing. In that case I could just by another tube and nipple but I cannot figure out where to put it.

Can anyone tell me where the tube goes? A picture would be awsome! Or is it possible my motor just doesnt have one?

I know that a speedometer isnt all that important but I just like for my stuff to work.

Thanks for any help! :)

On the later models, usually there is a "L" shaped nylon/plastic fitting on the front portion of the lower unit near the top area of the lower unit. The do get broken off. Is there a piece of plastic still in the loose tubing? Look closely at the forward section of the lower unit.

If it's there, yank the broken portion out and tap a new one in.

There isnt anything in the loose tubing. I have seen the L shaped fitting you are talking about when looking up parts online. There isnt anything like this on the lower unit that I can find. I cant even find a hole on the leading edge. I have pulled off the lower unit (still have it off), the hole would be in that section of the motor correct?

The hole where the fitting goes is on the very top of the g/c in the front. The hole that feeds it is in the front bottom on the leading edge of the g/c. According to the model # you posted it's a 2001.

I am a little confused on the year as I have seen online that the model was 2001 on occasion. However, the sticker on the motor says 2000.

I think I may have figured out the hole. There is a small horseshoe shaped hole on the bottom of the powerhead where the lower unit attaches. I have attached pictures of the hole and the lower unit. The yellow arrow points to where the hole will be after the lower unit is reattached.

If this is the hole, do I just order a pitot tube and clip it in that hole? Then run the rubber line down to it?

I also attached a pic of the sticker. You can barely see '2000' at the bottom because of the lighting...also you can see that the model number could end F or E. I chose F :)

That hole is a water drain... Do Not plug it with anything. That model number indicates that the engine is a 2001 115hp Johnson.

As Boobie states, there should be two (2) holes in the front portion of that lower unit (Post #4 above).

I'm wondering if someone has switched lower units on that engine. If so, you'll need to have a speedometer pickup installed on the transom, available at any dealership.

Yes. The lower unit was changed out before I acquired it. I guess they changed it out with a lower unit that has no pitot. Now I hope that the lower unit is right for the motor.....thanks for the help y'all.

Yes, that lower unit not having the speedometer pickup feature would make one wonder how old it is. Hope it works out for you.

The pic said it all. It's a 2001 model and no speedo pick up in the G/C. Having a different L/U on it answers it all.
