I have a 1999 javelin and the speedometer cable that goes into the lower unit to read was broken off and hanging loose from the lower unit so for a quick fix i put a pitot tube on while i was diagnosing issues. But it still will not pick up.I took a air compressor blew air through the line from both ends also.I can take off and when i am running WOT it might read 20mph,But if i blow air through it with a compressor it will shoot up to 65mph.Any idea what this could be?Anything i can check or is it just a faulty gauge.

Eventually i would like to fix it back stock with the cable going into the lower unit But i was afraid it would cost to much money so for the time being i just wanted to get a reading on the speedometer while i am diagnosing the boat and restoring it.How big of a job would it be to run it back into the lower unit what is involved in that ?

Here is where i mounted the pitot tube.I was not sure if i should mount it to the main lower section as it was next to the drains for the live well .But looking at the picture it may need to go to that lower section .101_1726.jpg

Ayuh,.... The pitot tube is mounted to High, it's not below, the lowest point of the hull, 'n is out of the clear stream of water...

Rehookin' it to the motor oughta be pretty easy,... Donno what motor ya got though....

It si not a "cable" -- it is a hollow plastic tube, Install a new tube and connect it to the fitting on the engine. If you can hook up a garden hose hooking up a speedometer tube is a piece of cake. You hooked it to a pitot, it hooks to the engine the same way.

I have a johnson 175.I have not had a chance to really look at how it hooked to the engine yet my father was they one that brought it to my attention. It hooked into the lower unit but he said they was a a little nipple on the tube that was broke off where it plugged into the engine. But the spot it plugs in to is very difficult to get to .so i was not sure how to get better access to it to . as i had to use needle nose pliers to even be able to reach the tube to pull it out.I noticed they was also a nother tube ran to the same spot on the side of the speedometer tube that i assume is for the water pressure but that gauge is also not reading correctly .I was just afraid i would have to remove the lower unit to access where the tubes plugged into the engine and that i something i was not comfortable with

Also just to be certain the pitot tube should be mounted to the main bottom where the plug is for the boat or the spot right above it where the intake and outake is for the livewell .I know i sound like a idiot for asking this stupid question's but i assure you i am trying to learn this as i go along and restore this boat as the previous owner just fished it and never really cared for it to much,And me being a Details ***** that i am i cant stand that.So i have a long road ahead of me but i am slowly making progress.

Ayuh,... That's correct,... Ya better get used to pullin' the lower, it's part of ownin', 'n fixin' a boat....

Put a straight edge along the bottom of the hull, 'n look at it...
The workin' end of yer pitot tube is Above that line, which is Why it don't work...
