My 2000 90 HP Johnson with 300 hours max time on it just failed at the dock in North Carolina. No spark evident, "kill" switch operational. The shop says it looks like an ignition module, (or whatever the right nomenclature is). Est. $ 400 for the part, couple hours to install. $500 to $600 total easy. Any other Johnson owners experiencing low time failures of these costly parts? It greatly shakes my trust in new engines. I thought I could resonably expect years of uninterupted service. What if it failed in the inlet! My last engine, an Evinrude, Made it 20 years with out a hiccup. Thanks!!

Just got the diagnostics, 2 hours labor at this time.Claims the pack went, Suggests replacing the sensor also, Parts, labor, further labor,$800 total. No help from the Manufacturer. Says I'm put of the one year warrenty. Bought it in October 00, Ran it till nov, stored it , ran it from april till nov, stored it, now ran it from april till now. Is this what to expect from new motors?

May I suggest you replace it yourself and save about $600.00. Not to bad to do!

The sensor should come with the pack for 60 degree engine, sensor and pack priced together.

Hind- sight, Hind-sight. Wish I knew how to diagnos it. Then I could install it. Live and learn. Johnson Tech support says they are not experiencing any problems with the line. Guess mine is just the one in ? that "dumped".

The power pack is a plug and play, the sensor is also plug and play, except you need to check the timimg after installing the new sensor.

Re: 2000 90 HP Johnson ignition problems

You got me there. And I repair helicopters for a living. I was just worried that I would get all that stuff and it would be wrong and I would have to eat it. I didn't know how bad the labor would be to replace it. I know that the hosing is in the labor. I wish I could get the test procedures like are published with our aircraft, then I could diagnos and replace.

Re: 2000 90 HP Johnson ignition problems

Check the primary side of coil for voltage with <br />a peak reading meter or multimeter with DVA adapter. See www.esitest.com. Should be 200 volts at cranking rpms or 130 volts running.. Should be check cold engine, and when engine is running full throttle in water in gear. If voltage is low on more then one cylinder stator me be bad. Disconnect packard connector on port side of power pack will bypass ignition and emergency switch. There have enough problems with this system that the sensor is now included with the pack. Buy the pack from www.rapair.com, or someone that sells there product, 12 month no hassle warranty.
