2000 70hp johnson kill switch

Does anybody know why my kill switch smokes when trying to start the motor? The motor only starts and runs for about 10 secs. and dies out. I took the cover off and unplugged the key switch plug and fired the motor up and it automatically died on me and I noticed white smoke coming from kill switch wire post on the plug coming from the power pack. Any suggestions to the root cause? Note: power pack and stator was new a year ago and this problem just started to occur recently.

there seems to be a short in the switch , trace the short with a meter

Ty for the tip. I am not much of an electrical technician can you suggest the type of meter I should use and the procedure.

Just an update- the short was the problem for anyone reading this with an electrical nightmare..Be sure to check all connections for carbon build up. I had carbon build up in one of my 6 pin connectors that was transfering electrical current to the other pins in the plug. replaced the plug and now she runs as she should.

Glad you found your problem and posted the cure, so may times the cure is never posted, might help someone else at some time.
