Hi I have a 2000 mercruiser 3.0 in and took the fuel pump filter out to change it but it is so hard to reach I reinstalled filter bowl without filter in plans of adding a inline filter and tried to start motor but wouldn't start it turn over but wouldn't start so my question is do I have to put a filter back in fuel pump for the boat to run if not what thin k I did to cause boat not to start. Thanks SSVBob

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... If the gasket is properly sealin', Ya the fuel pump oughta be pumpin' fuel,...

It's on the vacuum side, so ya won't see gas drippin',....

As for not startin',..... Did ya look down the carb, move the throttle, 'n See if it's got gas,..??

Also, even with a canister filter ya ain't put on yet, replacin' that filter is cheap insurance, to protect the fuel pump, 'n carb,....
The little in-line throw-away filters should Never be used on a boat,......

Hi Bondo I have been out town but back now yes there is spark when I carefully put gas in the carb and crank motor it starts for a second or two so Im wondering if some how I blocked or plugged up the fuel pump putting filter bowl back on ,I tried 4 or 5 times trying to put filter and spring and gaskets on pump but ended up putting only fuel bowl with gaset back on pump , im thinking I might take bowl back off and clean up and try to look with a mirror for blockage under the pump ,what you think of that
Thanks Bob

Ayuh,.... That bowl is on the vacuum side of the pump,....

I'd sooner think it's leakin' air(vacuum), than a blockage,...

I had a problem similar to this when I started up my engine after replacement. I have an electric fuel pump. When I tried starting it would jus turn over but not fire. For some reason no gas was getting up and the pump wasn't starting. I jumpered the pump to the battery until it primed the system and she fired right up.
