I recently bought a 2000 short shaft Johnson Outboard, tiller steering, electric start. No owner's manual. The motor does great on the open water at higher speeds, but won't go slow without stalling. There is a choke pull on the front of the motor. The guy I bought the motor from said that he just pulls it out then pushes it back in to start motor and not to run with it out. I noticed that if I do pull the knob out slightly, the motor will run slowly. What is that knob for anyway?

INJECTS FUEL BEHIND CARB FOR STARTING CALLED A PRIMER.KNOWING THAT THE MOTOR IS IN GOOD HEALTH-COMPRESSION.TRY TO ADJUST CARB BY TURNING SCREW ON SIDE OF CARB AND SEE IF IT HELPS IDLE.

I have a 1990 30HP rope start, tiller, Johnson. To the best of my knowlege this motor has not significantly changed in many years. The knob is a primer. The knob should be pulled out and pushed in to the red mark from 3 to 6 times on a cold start. After warm up the knob is pushed all the way in to the detent (red line is hidden). I think you need a carb kit and to reset your low speed needle. Sounds like the idle circut is running lean if it idles good with the primer knob out.

I bought a carb rebuild kit and also just got my SELOC repair manual in the mail today. Boy, what a hodge podge of info. Wish the info in the manual was broken down a little better by motor. I'm pretty handy with a wrench, but no mechanic. Is this carb rebuild something I should handle or pass off to a marine mechanic?
