Hello, I was having several problems with a 200 ocean runner, when my father bought it ( his eyes are bad) he did not see that at one time a rod must have came out the side of the engine and was repaired in which they did a great repair job on it but I have had 6 people tell me the vro caused the problem and should have been unhooked and mix the oil and gas. Does anyone know the proceedure in removing the vro so this don't happen again? I appreciate any imput Thanks Alan R.

Re: 200 ocean runner vro

The VRO may have caused the failure, or it may not have. There is not enough evidence to determine. What year is that motor? The late 90's motors have a no oil warning alarm. Did it sound? Do you have that alarm? The late 90's VRO systems are excellent.

The point I am trying to make is that you are reaching a solution, not based upon any facts. My premix Merc threw a rod, due to connecting rod cap bolt failure.

Re: 200 ocean runner vro

chris, thanks for the reply. The engine is an early 90's m/n J200 TZERK and as I got it running and letting it warm up the rpm's started to drop off and it would shut off as if the key was turned off but as soon as I turn the key it's running before the engine makes a half a reveloution after doing this 5 or 6 times I was hearing a beep every 3 or 4 seconds so I'm assuming that is the oil alarm I just didn't know if that is also why it is shutting off because the vro is not working properly. any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks Alan R.

Re: 200 ocean runner vro

First thing to do if you suspect the VRO/OMS is not oiling is....pre-mix the gas you are using!
If the VRO is oiling, and you have pre-mixed the gas...then you will be running on 25 to 1 ratio, which will not hurt anything.

debug the oiling system, make sure it is working, etc. and then go back to straight gas.

A VRO failure will typically damage ALL THE CYLINDERS (rods included), not just one.
If the engine threw a rod due to VRO failure, then assuredly there was much more damage...scored cylinder walls....etc.

You generally hear people blame the VRO first, without really understanding how it works, or thoroughly determining the exact cause of the failure.

However, if you are leery of the VRO system, look in the top secret posting above for removal instructions.
