I can get a good deal on a 25 inch motor- Problem is my transom is a 20 incher. I AM NOT going to redo the transom to a 25 inch height. Is a 25 inch motor OK on a 20 inch transom?

The guy selling it says OK, I don't think so.

The MUST be matched- right?

The problem you will run into is that there is too much leg in the water, which equals too much drag. You will burn too much fuel, and have problems getting your setup right as far as prop goes. If it was a 5 horse kicker on a small tinny, who cares, but a larger boat with real power it will be a problem. Your only solutions are to get a 20 inch motor, rebuild the transom to accomodate the motor, or put the motor on a bracket. What hp are we talkin' here?

It MAY be possible to get the short shaft leg and driveshaft, and convert this motor. It all depends on IF the motor is a really good deal, and will still be such a good deal after you factor in the cost of converting.

Also, I am not sure if all motors can be changed from long to short. You would need to give us a model number if possible.

All,
Yeah, I'm going to get a 20 inch motor. There are plenty of 20 inchers out there. Ebay has several each week I'd jump on, just taking my time and shopping carefully....

I want a YAHAMA, or a MERCURY, as the first choice motors, but would do an Evinrude or Johnson if the right opportunity came along.

I'm always weighing price Vs. performance, etc...

Now it gets personal, I'd choose an Evinrude/Johnson any day, before looking at a merc. Yamaha, Tohatsu, Honda etc.... I haven't had much to do with, some of my friends run them, they say they are good motors. But Merc... I have the remains of one in the back yard, it never did run right, and I also have a 3.5 mariner(merc) for my canoe, it is a pain in the butt.
