20 hp Mariner serial number history

I have a 20 hp 1992 Mariner according to the serial number information I can gather. The serial number is D158535 from the disk on side of power head. What is the history of this numbering system. Most of the websites I go to with this serial number comes back and not found. I have only found this number on one web site. Any information on this serial number is helpful. Thanks

No big secret you engine is a American built Mariner and in 1992 the starting serial number was D082000 and in 1993 the starting serial number was D18200O your engine falls in between so it is a 1992
