I have read as many postings as I can find but none have solved my problem . Recently I acquired an older johnson 20 hp. the motor is white in color ,twin cylinder and the cowling says it is 20 hp. I have looked all over this thing and cannot find the identifying model and serial numbers. The numbers I have found are , welch plug stamped G3000852, transom mount frame, 188055 , I cannot match them with a model year etc.any help would be appreciated, thanks

If you can post a pic, that would be a great help. Judging by that model number, it looks like it's a 1968 model That last 5 might be an S

There must be something else on the transom mount? Starts with FD? Post a pic though anyway.

This is what my '66 J20 looks like but has a '65 J18 cowling on it. (but they are very similar)

Yea, the Johnson Model numbers usually start with two letters, where as the Evinrude models with two numbers:cool:

The number on the welch plug is the serial number. Johnson made their 3 millionth motor in 1968, so that pretty well narrows it down to a 1968. Unless the 3,000,852th one kicks it into 1969.

1968 20hp model is FD-22 (FDL-22 if long shaft)
