Hello Everyone,
Long time listener but 1st time caller. = )
I have a 1989 30hp Evinrude outboard. The motor has low hours and is well taken care of, but ive ran into a problem. Did all the usual prep work to get it ready for season, (new lower unit oil, compression etc...) When i started and flushed it with the muffs, it was a hard start. Thought maybe a plug was bad so i checked them for spark, fine. ok, so i went ahead and turned the primer valve(red lever) to the manual run position and the motor started right up, i turned the valve back to the normal run position and ran a bit rough but cleared up and made it through me flushing it with no problems..that is until i turned it off, it would not shut off, with a bit of troubleshooting i got it to kill thru grounding the black and yellow kill wire between the powerpacks...It turns over fine so i was told if anything the kill circuit wasnt grounding but my powerpacks were fine? Flash foward....Took it out this weekend, primed and ran fine for some time (4-5hrs) then after a bit of time at WOT it bogged down and acted like it was flooded, thought i may of left the manual primer on, but didnt...the problem occured 1-2 more times throughout the weekend. Now that i have it home, hooked the muffs up and am discovering it will not even stay running at idle unless the manual lever on the primer is left open, this is obviously causing a flooding issue and rich mix, but it chokes out when the valve is at normal position(clockwise over the solenoid) Sorry for the long story..details....the carb opens and closes with the throttle controls just fine and the electric primer works to start, I just cant keep it running now unless the manual valve is opened at least somewhat. Does this problem sound like a carb clean/float problem or is the electic prime solenoid failing? Or could this be a deeper issue thats tied into the electic problem causing the solenoid/fuel problem? Primer has its own ground and clicks fine on push to start, the prob is right after initial idle on normal run? Any input would be nice and helpful, thank anyone for their patience in finishing this post lol = )
Thanks!
A scurvydog....

If the carb/s haven't been overhauled in more than a year or you dont know the last time. Overhaul carb/s with OEM kit/s. Welcome to iboats.

Thanks for the welcome and the input. I was told carb was recently taken apart and cleaned, i know sometimes that doesnt matter as objects can get stuck in them at any point in time. Im still gonna clean/rework them; but lets just say its not the carbs. Would the starter soleniod/primer cause this type of problem if it was failing and/or not getting any/enough power? Although it does work at initial start. Has me a bit puzzled tbh even though this might be something obvious(besides carbs lol). Anyrate ill clean carbs and even double check the slow idle screw setting b4 all that and check back for any more sound advice. = )
