Hey guys i just finished putting on a new coil, condensor, cleaned the points and installed a new plug wire. It fired up really good after a few pulls with the choke out. I can get it to idle on the start position really good, but when i start to idle it down at a low idle it will idle for about 5 minutes and then it will die. Then its a pain in the ***** to start. I usually have to swap plugs and pull on it a little while playing with the choke. I have messed with the idle knobs , both low and high speed while its at low idle. It sounds like its adjusted right ,but then the motor dies after a little while . Any suggestions, keep in mind i bought this motor off of ebay and it was made in 1972. I have a manuel for the motor and im thinking im doing the adjustment needles right. I turn each needle clockwise until they wont turn any more. Then i will back out by turning counter clockwise 1 1/4 turns on the low speed and 1/4 turn on the high speed. I have no idea when the carb had been off of this thing.

Is the vent open on the built in tank? Cant suck fuel out of a vaccuum.

I may be mistaken but believe the high speed needle should be around 3/4 backed out, not 1/4

Check the FAQS for a thread by Joe Reeves on adjusting the needles.

So, the compression reading is ???? Has it ever been overheated? Is it overheating now? It is possible it is just plain worn out.

Are you sure you got a correct reading? And what spark plug are you using??

dont give up yet, 60 psi comp is low, but as you said, "dont know when the carb has been off this thing"! get a carb kit, go further than just putting in the parts...ie....soak it, pull the welch plugs, clean all the holes.....just do it right so you know for sure that its done right.

Well i screwed up the compression test the first time. Ive got a compression reading of 90lbs on three different test. Is this good, im not sure. Im guessing all i have left is the carb now. Is their anything special i need for the carb . Ive never taken one off before .

the factory is 1/2 turn out for High speed needle. 1 1/4 is good for low speed. These are starting points.

you didn't answer the question posted up earlier... is it overheating? Is it spraying water out the exhaust relief holes? You are running it in a barrel of water, right?? The impeller on those is really easy to change. And the tank vent... on mine the vent vibrates closed after running for a while if I don't unscrew it all the way so that it jams open. (then it stays open)...

Re: 2 hp evenruide

No overheating issues , i changed the water pump and impellar out. I started it up today and had it at 1/2 throttle for about 20 minutes today. It sounded good , i think i had the low speed too lean. I lost the knob to it , so i found a replacment and was able to use the knob as a better reference then just trying to guess at it. I shut it off about 5 times and was able to start it on the first pull without the choke out when it was warm. I am still having a hard time with a low idle. It will idle really good for about five minutes and then the rpm's will kind of drop off like its going to die, but the rpms will pick back up to where it was. I did notice alot of crap floating around in my barrell . I am going to try some seafoam and see if that will smooth it out a little before i rebuild the carb.

Yea, I would sea foam it. Get all the carb cleaned out from the rings and such. 90 psi is excellent, but it'll still run on 60. I had many good runners that had 60 psi in each hole, but they were 3hp and smaller. You might back the low speed needle out a little bit at a time, to see if the idle smoothes out. Give it 1/8 turn and run it for a few minutes to see if it improves.

Ditto. Give it the old Sea foam treatment and she should smooth out. If the revving up and down persists after that then check to see if you have an air leak in the fuel system. I had one that caused revving up and down of the motor, but it went away once the leak was found and fixed. Search the forums for "decarb" and/or "Sea foam" and you'll find tons of posts. Lots of vids on youtube too. Best $10 you can spend on your motor, and it makes a world of difference.
