Hi, I have 1986 V4 90HP Evinrude, My 1st. problem is every time I go to the ramp, to start the motor it takes a while for the motor to start, I used the prime key and the motor get over flooded I keep cranking with-out the prime key and it gets to dry, I used ageing the prime key and it starts but it take time to start, after the motor is turn on for the 1st time, the motor run and start like a new motor. I can shut it off as many time as I want and the motor will start right away even when I’m fishing and the motor gets really cold, it will start right away also, My 2nd Problem it happens twice on two different days, when I’m on full throttle (I believed about 5400 or 5800 rpm I don’t remember exactly) for about 10 minutes the motor start getting hot and instead of water coming out thru the pee hole I see low drops of water with a lot steam. I shut the motor off right away and weight about 30 minutes before starting the motor ageing. Now if I run the motor 100-rpm less then full throttle witch is 5300 or 5700 RPM, I can run like that all Day and the motor never gets overheated. Any advice or any idea on why is doing that? I really appreciated any help or advice.
Thank you

You need to replace the impeller, Eula.

Tank’s JB

Even if I see a strong water pressure coming out thru the pee hole when the motor is running on 5300 or 5700 rpm (Not Full throttle), I still have to get a new impeller? How about the other situation? Is there any advice on why it takes so long for the motor to start?

Thank you

Be sure you squeeze the primer bulb on the fuel line till firm before you start.

Re: 2 Evinrude Situations

Carburetor floats might be part of the problem (may not be level) -- although incorrectly adjusted floats would probably cause problems on restarts as well. Try this starting technique: Pump the bulb just enough to get fuel up to the carbs -- no more than that or you risk flooding. Don't use the prime key. If the motor has a manual choke setting, you might try choking the motor (full choke) when you initially crank it. Set the throttle at a high idle. Crank it for maybe 10 seconds. If it starts or starts to fire, immediately disengage the choke. If it doesn't start, disengage the choke and crank it for another 10 seconds. It sounds offhand like you have a flooding problem when cold-starting, and it might be your technique.

I agree with the earlier post -- sounds like you should replace the water pump impeller. It may be missing a vane or two, or may have developed a "set" and is pumping at less than full efficiency.
