I'm looking to buy a two cylinder 60hp. i'm not sure of the year but the guy told me the model number is J60elc0p. I think it's a 1985 but i'm not sure.

I have no idea what the compression is but the guy said it's good and it runs (month ago). Comes with controls.

No power trim and tilt.

He's asking 425 but i'm gonna make him come down a bit.

Checklist:
-compression
-spark-
-general check
-gear oil
-anything else?

good deal? Only thing i've heard that the cylinder is prone to cracking due to them trying to get too much power out of it?

Yea, if it's a nice looking motor and compression checks out, that price isn't too bad and yes, it does check out as a 1985.

I sold a 1986 25hp with controls recently and got $800 out of it, so that price isn't too bad.

I sold my 1990 25hp. manual start and tiller. $550. Paint was bad but it was solid....had a slight miss (bad ignition system). Ran WOT fine.

I had a 1982 Evinrude 60 2 cylinder.... GREAT motor. I sold it for $700. Wish I never sold it!!! Miss that motor!! I had 150 psi on both cylinders. But if it has good compression and in good shape. SNATCH that motor up!!

You still tinkering with the oldies? I've built quite a collection lately. :D

YUP! Still have my old 1959 hybrid with 1960 10hp...lol parts motor. Runs perfect and 10x better than my mercury. I have an old red 1.5hp but i forgot the make at the moment....I also still have my 1961 50hp which needs a new cap and rotor but I think i might sell it before the ignition system completely stops working. Runs WOT fine :D

Picked up the motor today. Compression came out to 150 top and 160 bottom. Good :D Started right up but it might need a tune up (carbs). Got a free battery (marine) that's still under warranty, engine stand for the motor, free 6 gallon tank (junky anyways), side console with steering cable (probably sell) and the controls for the motor.

No PTAT but I guess i couldn't spoil myself too much :D

Got everything for $350+$10 gas.

Not a bad motor.....in hindsight i would opt for the later 3cyl version though.

What is the difference between the big twin 60 and the 3 cylinder 60? I mean besides the extra cylinder....

Three cylinders as opposed to two to produce 60 horses to me says a less stressed motor......they are also hp rated at the prop not the flywheel (2cyl) meaning you actually have 60hp in the water.....so a little more top end too methinks.

I believe they added the extra cylinder because in 1986 they prop rated for HP so the extra cylinder was needed for power. In addition, the 3 cylinder was smoother and "less stress" lol....

1986 was the first year for the mercury 45hp, previously the 50hp but rated at the crank and not the prop like the 45hp.
