I am certainly happy your parents never even once got killed. Mine never wore seat belts and were killed 5 times. It was only then that they began to wear them.
I think the logic you are using is faulty also. "I don't really know so it must not be good" is just as faulty as "I've done it before and it must be ok".
Fair enough, so how about this instead: "I don't know, so I count on experts, specifically, the NMMA to test and certifiy the oil I use."
I did some research and (without using Wikkipedia even once) concluded that the ash content explanation was as good an understanding as I (a non-scientist) was going to get.
If I had saved the links I'd provide 'em for ya, but I guess if it matters that much, you'll have do a bit of searching.
