Hello everyone, I just started boating i have 85 model force 85 h.p.on it.I have read on these forums to use quicksilver or name brand oils as long as they have TC-W3 nmma.well the wal-mart brand super tech has that same rating as the other name brands only thing i see different is it is 5 dollars a gallon and the others is 18 dollars a gallon is there a diference?? Doesnt the name brands do just like wal-mart buy it from some oil company that meets TC-W3 and NMMA standards and offers it at the best rate ?? Would like to here from both sides the name brand oil users and the wal-mart brand oil users? Thanks and either one you use may it keep you lubed. :) :p

hello<br /> my old 1985 120 evinrude with vro does just fine on the tech 2000 at 5.95 a gallon. if this was a new motor I would say stick with the quicksilver. the big thing I have seen is to decarbonize with amazing regularity. I also run ring free at every tank fill.<br /> good luck and happy boating

Great advice so far. SuperTech (Wal Mart) oil and regular decarbs. Has been working for me! :)

Everyone is so right!. Don't waste your money on expensive $6.00/qt. Walmart supertech is made by Shell oil and it has NMMA certification. You can go to NMMA .com and find all the information that you need on this big topic. Enjoy.

TCW3 is all you have to worry about, NMMA certification does not mean a dannm thing, other than the packager has paid the bribe to the NMMA. You pay the fee, and you get certified, you don't pay, you do not get certified, even if you are the best on the market. If you paid last year, and were certified, ok if this year comes along, and you do not send the check, you lose your certification. The ****** oil company makes the TCW3 for 5 different repackagers, that purchase it in 55 gallon drums, and resell it in small plastic containers, with their name on it. All the same product, if three of them pay the NMMa the certification fee, they are certified, the other two are reselling the same product, do not pay the certification fee (bribe), they are not certified. That is how business works, when I was in business, I purchased product, and if I purchased a certain quantity, they put my name ( The name and address of my business) on the containers. I had nothing to do with the manufacture of it, I just sold it, and a thousand other shops sold the same item, with my name on it, and I would be willing to bet there were persons that would swear by mine, and say the shop's across town (selling the same thing) was no good. "NO ONE" can tell you which is the best oil, but if it is labled as TCW3, it supposedly meets all the criteria to be satisfactory. For all any of us know, there may be only one plant in the world that makes TCW3 oil, and any you buy anywhere comes from the same large tanks. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Re: 2 cycle oil whats the best ??

I have no financial interest in this product. Just an enthusiastic user for almost 30 years. Amongst all of my other 2 cycle implements, I had a 1979 100 hp Evinrude on my 10' x 30 double deck patio boat from 1979 till I sold the boat in 1988.<br />After breakin I switched to 100:1 Amsoil Synthetic two stroke oil. The boat got regular usage, every other weekend during the summer, while I owned it. I never had to change the spark plugs clear through the day I sold the boat. Every May, 3 friends with houseboats and I would go up to the lake and fire up the motors. They had to crank and crank and crank to get them started and when they did, tons of blue smoke till they warmed a bit. I would hit the primer bulb on mine, crank it once then again and it would fire, run smooth very quickly without all of the smoke. My friends were changing their plugs every other year. Why didn't they switch oil? ??? Will anyone here even try it in their string edger?<br /><br />At least check it out. It has the T rating.<br /><br /> http://www.amsoil.com/products/aio.html

I always get a kick out of this discussion!<br />"Run the cheap stuff -- it's all the same. But be sure to de-carbon regularly".<br /><br />You do add the cost of your ring free to the cost of your oil don't you? And how about those fouled spark plugs you replace twice a year. Add that up too.<br /><br />Why not just run the good stuff in the first place?<br /><br />Dave

For answers to the perrenial oil questions, read the article and lab tests on TC-W3 oil in the Aug. 2000 issue of Bass and Walleye Boats.

Re: 2 cycle oil whats the best ??

I agree with oilman, I love this oil discussion too!<br />Ive used synthetics in all my outboards over the years, and I feel the same! I also have never had a major breakdown! Never lost a powerhead! You other guys just go ahead and buy all the ring free and decarb and spark plugs you want! Yea, this stuff all works wonders when you have a lot of carbon buildup but synthetics have very little carbon buildup if any and never foul plugs! Who wants to change plugs out in the middle of the lake or worse yet out in the ocean?? Use it in the lower unit also!<br /><br />Run the good stuff! Just the performance is worth it! Ams/oil, Synergyn, Penzoil, just to name a few! I use Synergyn, but Ams/oil is very good also! Both perform equally well! Ive used both and only use Synergyn because I can get it easier here! Yea, Ive seen the post about Synergyn, but its bunk!! If it bows up, it must be the oil, Right!!!<br /><br />Well Oilman, we can tell them and tell them and only a few will listen!<br /><br />Hasbeen

Re: 2 cycle oil whats the best ??

I have twin 1996 Yamaha 250's and use whatever is on sale as long as its TCW3. Mostly walmart and west marine oil. Never used ring free or decarbonized and had the stbd engine apart because I ran it low on oil and the oil horn did'nt go off. Besides the destroyed piston (my fault) the motor looked spotless and these have @ 500 hours on them with lots of trolling. Yamaha owners beware, the oil warning system has a new assembly and for 75 bucks its cheap insurance. Test you system by draining the oil from the tank with the key on. Your horn should sound. If not replace the assembly which is very easy to do.

Boys...this brings up a hole-nother topic..........Spark plugs!!!!<br /> They SHOULD be changed once a year to protect your ignition system.<br /> The longer the plug runs, the higher the resistance, the higher the resistance, the harder it gets to fire the plug causing undue stress to ignition components that I must say I'm surprised nobody has mentioned???????

I must say that Ive not heard that one about spark plugs Walleyehed! Then why do spark plugs in cars last so long! They have hot ignitions too! Ive used spark plugs for years with no performance change! Always open to new information though! Article to read!<br /><br />I have to change the plugs in my RX/7 rotory Mazda every 10-15,000 because it just eats them up, but I can see the deterioration!<br /><br />Hasbeen

Not to be disrespectfull, but what does oil have to do with resistance??? Especially if the synthetic burns so much cleaner that carbon does not build up on them????<br /><br />Hasbeen
