2.5 mercrusier shift problems

I have a 84 2.5 mercruiser with an alpha 1 drive the problem might be stupid to avid boaters but im fairly new the boat shifts fine when i dont have it running but once it is in the water it is hard to get it out of forward but goes in easy and the same with reverse today on the water when i take it out of reverse it kills the motor most of the time any help would be aprreciated
The guy I bought the boatfrom said he just had all the cables adjusted and bad ones replaced I heard something about a kill switch or something

you might want to start out by looking at your nuetral safety switch. that might be the sorce of your problem for the killing part and maybe the shift problem if it is not installed right
