165 L-6 MC-1 drive, Well it worked on the muffs. Eng. runs at normal temp idling in neutral and under way at an idle but if i run 800-1000 +rpms under way it runs up into the red too hot. Here is my plumbing, lol Maybe the drive water pump can't handle the eng. + ex. Manifold. This is a full closed system with the block off plate between the riser and manifold. The expansion tank is Tee'd into the thop thermostat hose. Any sugestions would be helpful, thanks. Sure was nice to get the boat launched though, thanks iboats and everyone for all the help.:)

Sticky T-Stat? Are you sure your outdrive's impeller, and the engine's water pump are both pumping water?

I removed the thermostat for testing and same results. Yes the drive pump is new and did fine on muffs. and the circulating pump is working too. This is the schematic i used for L-6 cooling system. see attached

Pull the hose from the impeller off, at the front of engine; hold it above transom level- if it shoots up, problem in engine, risers...

Re: 1st time out, cooling issue

Thanks Zig thats the reverse flow for an open raw water system. I do have the flow in that direction ( reverse flow) And the heat exchanger is a Chrysler V-8 exchanger est. 4"x2' which handled a v-8 so i figured it may handle the L-6. I didn't want to run salt water through the exhaust. If i cant figure this out i'll have to plumb a half system. :( See this attached pic? it doesn't coinside with the other closed system? I think whats throwing me off is either the small tube outlet from the circulating pump or i have two outlets from the therm housing, one below the themostat and one above the thermostat. This pic i attached doesn't incorporate these outlets?

Re: 1st time out, cooling issue

the first diagram is what i have, it matches the second one is what i went by. well it's not working so i'm not sure what to change any ideas? Pumps are working good. I think the way i have it, the hot water from the manifold is recirculating back into the engine and not letting the engine cool right. I'm the one that needs a diagram lol thanks

I think there is a diagram in here, as Ziggy said; but it is old and buried.

Re: 1st time out, cooling issue

I talked with tony and he said it ran on the hot side under a load too. He mailed me his pics but i couldn't really tell how everything was plumbed from them. The last diagram i sent says the end cap of the manifold goes to cooler but i cant figure out how to do that with my water pump and therm housing going to the exchanger i cant put the manifold to it to, there's only an inlet and outlet on the exchanger.

Ziggy you have a P.M. The way i have the system now and the way the first diagram that i went by has it, isthe hot water from the exhaust manifold is recirculating back through the motor. I think i need to t it into the heat exchanger as well as the thermostat housing outlet? hmmm what a puzzle lol I wanna go boating damn it!

Re: 1st time out, cooling issue

Well i guess i'll try this! see attached, compare it to the first attached and see that the hot water from the exhaust man. on this new idea isn't recirculating back through engine. It's going to the exchanger. I'll block off the bottom outlet on the therm housing and block off the small inlet on the water pump and try it it's the only way i can figure it. Any input on the compare between the two would be appreciated. Make sense to anyone? thanks
