If the guy will hold her for me 'till Friday, she's mine for a hundred clams. I know the transom will have to be removed and replaced, and then we'll see what the floor looks like. Here she is

Re: 1st project (hopefully) many pics

Probably a total rebuild, but with all the help from my buddies here, I might have a classic that will give me many hours of enjoyment (workin' on a boat) and then having the satisfaction of doin' it yourself' and then flyin' across that glass like water!

The hull looked like it was in great shape and I only found one flaw on the starboard side.

Let me know what y'all think, and I'll be sure and let you know if I end up getting her.

From all the pictures, can anyone give an estimate of how much money it would take to get her on the water?

I guess the manufaturer is Newman? Any thoughts on it?

Re: 1st project (hopefully) many pics

it's classic with a Gale engine, which was OMC,(johnson/evinrude) most parts interchangeable, it's a good project, use common sense in rebuilding, it keeps the cost down. the money you put into it has to be considered you're pleasure, not an investment. but believe me there is nothing like sitting at the ramp in a Classic boat, with a Classic engine, the starts the 1st or 2nd try, while the guys with the big payment crank and grind to get there's started. they may run faster but don't look any better. Looks to be early 60's we use to have a 60hp Gale that was a great engine. this looks to be about a 40hp.

What is your objective? Restore/refurbish/rebuild it or just make it float?

If you want to restore/rebuild it (transom, floor, steering, seats, fittings, hardware, wiring, nav lights, gauges, engine controls, fuel tank, windshield, gelcoat/paint, trailer work, motor work, accessories, etc) figure on $3 - 6,000.00

Although it appears -- um -- "neglected", its still a nice looking classic boat that is worth the effort if you keep it.

If the gel coat is not badly cracked it looks like it might polish out nice. Otherwise just paint it.

Start by completely emptying it out, take inventory and photos. Then strip it of all hardware (steering, lights, windshield, etc) box it up and start working on the transom and floor. Do not lose the wheel or nav lights/hardware. They are nice and can be re-chromed (up the estimate by another $600) or painted. Those things are hard to find. The wheel can be fixed with epoxy and painted. It can look very nice when done.

This looks a lot like my buddies boat, which we were supposed to get some time in restoring this year, but it looks like it won't until next year.

Anyway, I think there were a few small manufacturers in this time period all building similar runabout style boats because his shares some very similar characteristics, the top deck, the curved windscreen, the rounded lines and the shape of the hull of course. I like the size of the boat and of course the runabout looks are fun. I think it's worth saving these old runabouts. Comparatively short money to refurbish compared to a mahogany high-gloss earlier runabout.

As for dollars and cents, you would be amazed at how you can keep the cost down, if you shop around and also be careful with materials. I usually mixed only about 4 ounces of resin at a time and if necesary mixed more than one 4 oz batch to do a job. That way I was not throwing away lots of resin each time I did some work.

Also get some books and do some reading. Jim Anderson's run about renovation is a great one. Also fiberglass repair books at the library are good to read through.

P.s. once you get her up and running you will amazed at how much $$ you spend on PDF's, Tow ropes, Water skis, Inner tubes, Wake boards, etc. Almos as much as the rebuild..

Re: 1st project many pics (UPDATE)

I got a hold of the seller today over my lunch hour and he says, the motor runs, (a small leak in lower unit, seals or gaskets?) and she floats with no leaks! He said he'll wait 'till Friday and it's a done deal. So far it seams I'll need to remove and replace the transom, overhaual the motor, with lower unit, and do whatever I want with the floor plan and seats.

I plan on constructing a bench seat to go right aft the captain's and passenger mounted pedastal seats. All the vinyl on the seats seems to be in great condition. (at least two of 'em anyway)

So, floor and transom replace alone with the motor tune-up, whatch'all think now for estimates. I plan on doing all the work my-self, (with the help from this forum)8) so parts will be the only expense.

HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice Project boat. if it were me I would bring that baby right back to original. Nothing turns heads on a lake or river like a well restored classic! Keep us in the loop

I had a boat similar to that. I loved that boat, and always got comments at the ramp. I put a 63 Merc inline 6 85 horse on the boat. Those old Mercs are the best looking classic motor in my opinion.

i dont know if the rules are the same in your state, but when i took my old project ( 58 sears boat ) to the lake, i had that same blue and red bow light that you both have... i was stopped as i was coming in from the water by the sherriff guy, and he told me that i had to change my light color because the colors had to be green and red, because blue and red is reserved for emergency boats... i dont know if its true, but i went and bought a little green and red one to help me avoid further dillemmas.....

Good Luck, and keep us posted. I have never heard of a project that was less than anticipated. But if you need components I can't think of a better place than here to get them at the right price.d:)

Jason J that is just a beautiful boat. My mouth is just hangin open.

Zuke, try sticking a piece of yellow plastic behind the blue, making it green.

Re: 1st project many pics (UPDATE)

clean it out, pressure wash it and see what you've got. pull the plugs on the engine and do a compression and spark check. you can just remove the plugs, and use a pull rope to do this. this will be a dry compression check so it will not be totally accurate, but enough to tell the condition. post your findings, this will tell if you want to continue with this engine, the transom job is dirtier a than hard. take you time and do it right.

Re: 1st project many pics (UPDATE)

Thanks for all the replies, guys. There is no cracking in the gel coat except 1 small flaw.

flaw.jpg

The seller told me that he had the lower unit on and it ran, but has been sitting around feeling lonely & neglected for two years. I've heard of you guys speaking of compression tests. I don't have a clue on how to do this, but I shall learn.
Mark, I almost want to get all the trash out of her before the deal is done! A messy boat drives me nutso! The power wash will be the first step. I'll know more after this weekend. I'm plannin' on keeping this boat as close to original as possible. All the chrome tie downs and navigation lights shine like they're new. I can't wait to get my hands dirty on this one!
