1st day of waterskiing in MN this year - March 16th
My son didn't have quite as much luck as I did and got to take a swim.

Each round you make it, they move the start line closer to the pond and you go again. Nobody completed the 3rd round, so it came down to distance. I came up a couple feet short of the winning mark, but remained standing and dry above the knees.

Niiice! You definitely score March waterski points for that.

Was that at Welch?
I don't suppose even a switch to super fat powder skis make enough difference on the short hill.

Afton alps, and the guy who won was running the widest powder skis I've ever seen.

Afton put out a crash highlight video - my son at :36 - :43

We headed to the lake yesterday...with a truck.
The ice fishermen were showing 24" of ice all over the lake. The snow was great, so we gave it a shot.
By the middle of the afternoon 7 of us had tried it.

The Suburban at 25 mph has a nice low-wake for slalom.

Then, to really celebrate our record early season outing just a year ago, I pulled out the combo skis.
Rocker bottoms and no edges made them a little tough to handle or turn on the snow, but it was good for some laughs.

That is great! I assume that was Bryant lake? Wish I would have known, we were over at TC running yesterday and could have watched.

Yes Bryant. We were sharing some ski gear from about 1988. It would been more fun to try with some more aggressive side cut.

Nice. Better in deep stuff? Seems like it would A) require a big edge change. B) be a little trickier to make balance adjustments. (Than with a 2 sno ski platform)

Some types are meant for powder, this one is for hardpack. Big edge change and it always feels like you are turning on your wrong leg. Hip pads are a good idea when learning, I've been doing it for 24 years - they were somewhat popular for a while in the late 80's but were really only widely adopted in Europe. Swapping back and forth between the mono and my race skis is always a challenge.

How nice to see you guys have taken full advantage to your MN spring season!

Wow, a mono ski. I don't see many of those in use today and have no clue as to how one would ski it. I am guessing that the mono would not work so well with the independent leg steering and long leg-short leg thing for GS.

Spring has been a long time coming this year. Ice is finally gone but I haven't been skiing.

I got out Tuesday evening for the first time this year. Felt good to be back on the feet!

I agree spring was long overdue here. This is the first year I can remember where I didn't make it in the water in April.

You guys are nuts. I won't even bother thinking about getting into the water until June, lol.

Picking my boat up Saturday, hope to be out for at least a hop out run next weekend.

Do you have to have an observer in the boat while water skiing operations are conducted in MN? This is my stumbling block in Michigan.

Nope...only a mirror. In Wisconsin you do need an observer, though. I agree, finding a third person to just ride along can be a pain sometimes.

The one thing that the WI law is good for though is limiting the number of jetskis that you see towing tubes ;) Not a ton of 3 person capacity jet skis.

I kinda like the MN law on jet fleas. I know I am guaranteed 2 hours in the evening without them seeing as they are supposed to be off the lake an hour before sunset and we can ski til an hour after.

Finally. 7-8 weeks behind schedule we got the season started. June 1 is the latest start we've had in about 15 years.
