Hello Everybody!

I wanted to post up here to kind of start a Restoration thread about this particular boat. I have been trying to find out as much info on this as I can (which is how I found this forum!)

To start, she is a red 1969 Chrysler Valiant Runabout 14ft with cathedral hull. I picked her up in a trade and am excited about getting to work on her. As i said this is my first boat so I am excited about starting a different type of project as I am mostly a car guy. Looking forward to hitting the lake with my family and have fun.

One of my major 1st questions would be for anybody who has experience with old boats.... where to find parts?

She is mostly all in tact, feels quite solid, but she was well used and there are a few cracked lenses and i have a chunk missing out of the bottom of the window. I am hoping to get her as close to the way she looked when she was new, or maybe do like a resto mod. I have not quite decided. I have tired searching through google but with the boat being the same name as the car i mostly get car results. Maybe somebody knows a good place?

2. The paint is crappy. I started taking compound and buffing it out. Seems to be helping a but but still seems dull. Is there like a special compound for boats? Maybe wet sand?

I will post up some pics later today when I get home from work and hopefully be able to learn a bit and enjoy a cool little boat.

With any boat that age you need to check the structural members first and tend to the cosmetics last.

You said it felt mostly solid, this really doesn't mean anything. You need to lift (remove) the decking and inspect the stringers, floatation foam, and transom for rot and waterlogging/saturation. This will ensure you a safe and seaworthy boat for you and your family.

You'll more than likely find rot and previous owner butcher jobs at attempted repairs... this is pretty common.

Take a look at some of the other restoration threads in this forum and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Here's a couple to get you started:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=524704

These boats don't look too bad at first glance, but look at what they find when they open them up... and both boats are younger than yours.

hi ....I have the same boat with a 1982 merc 50 hp.....I didn`t have to do a lot to it as the previous owner had ripped out the floor and installed new foam ,plywood and glass over it ....he also changed the colour to a white hull and navy deck and I made new back to back seats for it. The boat with 2 adults aboard goes over 30 mph and is very stable ......I use it for tubing fishing and just goofing about both on a lake and a saltwater bay .....I`ve even been out in 4ft swells ...mind you not very fast and wasn`t very worried about swamping or tipping ......here is a link to a video of my first trial run ....I`ll look for some pictures to post as well ....Id like to s
see some of you restoration project .....good luck..................
