Hello everyone, I am a long time boater but first time owner. I am also a first time poster but have been reading the forums for a long time. Thanks to everyone that has provided great information to this forum.

As the title says I purchased a 1999 Stingray 190LX. This will be my official rebuild thread. I have a email out to the Stingray engineers trying to get more information on the stringers, deck and transom. From what I understand they used pure glass stringers with no wood so should be good there. Transom seems solid but probably going to core and make sure hopefully its good. Deck is sturdy but think i'm going to replace the carpet, or maybe a deep steam clean and let it be, advice is welcome.

The interior is out getting redone, all new wood and SS hardware. I understand they used PT Marine plywood for all wood surface, none is truly rotted but is definitely not good anymore. It is getting replaced but marine ply is super expensive around so I am planning on just using good exterior grade with a couple coats marine varnish. My research says that should be good enough so if its not please let me know and then how to proceed. On the subject of the interior, for anyone trying to remove it on these boats, be careful of the hidden screws under the vinyl on the sides (look for holes under the flaps, dig with a screw driver and bet you find a screw(s)) and all the hidden screws under the carpet on the back bench.
So finally on to the bench seat. I am rebuilding and carpeting it. Again I plan on using exterior grade plywood with varnish, then carpet. My first problem is they used 1.5" staples and some sort of glue in some spots. I can't find any 1.5" SS staples around but I can find galvanized, will that work? Is there something better to use since I also have to source a staple gun. Also what kind of glue should I use?

I look forward to working with everyone and appreciate the help. Thank You in advance.

I'm kinda partial to using this for the wood work you're doing...

I never even would have thought of that mixture. Is the final coat just straight marine varnish or is it the polyurethane from the mixture?

I'm still trying to figure out the fastening problem. Can I use wood glue and Brad nails that are galvanized or do they have to be SS Staples.

Doesn't have to be Marine Varnish unless the wood will be exposed to direct sunlight. Straight Poly will get it done. Titelbond III wood glue and Deck Screws would be my choice for fastening.

I am going to use 1x 1 for backing to screw into. Should be much stronger then just staples in the sides like Wood suggested.

Do I need to seal each piece before assymbley or as once it's all together

Hello everyone,

I forgot to mention that I will be wrapping the bench in carpet just like from the factory. Does that change the way I seal it. I will probably us the DAP 0443 carpet glue. Do I just not seal the faces that will have carpet on them and seal all the other edges.

Thanks

Got the wood today, all they had was BC exterior plywood but figured since I'm sealing it anyways that should be good. Still wondering about the question above but at least I can start tracing and cutting.

Did you pull up enough to see the stringers in the floor? Are they truly pure glass? I an looking at a 1999 190RS and the floor feels solid(no soft spots) but seems to not be attached to the stingers in some places.

You need to seal all sides prior to assembly, not after. Water is going to find its way everywhere.
Wood is comprised of little tiny tubes that are used to transport water and nutrients up the tree, so endgrain is basically like a bunch of little straws, so this is where you want to focus the most when sealing wood. So any solid wood you use, make sure to put several coats on the end grain.

The tricky thing is with plywood, they use alternating sheets of ply, so you essentially have end grain on all 4 sides. As long as you address this you should be good.

How is the restore going? What did you use for sealing the wood? Any final pictures? I have started my 1999 190RS and will be in the same boat as you(pun intended). All new vinyl and wood on seats. I am considering changing the seating to a bench instead of engine cover with cheek seats. How do you like the bench layout?

Hello Boise,

I sealed the new wood with Helmsman Spar Urethane Satin and used 3M 5200 to bed the screws. I never pulled the floor but everything I can see does appear to be glassed and is solid. It is still a work in progress because I ran into some engine troubles. I had the one piece manifolds that cause a lot of issues and they were letting water in the engine. I replaced them and now have the 2 piece manifolds and seems to fix the problem. Engine runs normal again. I really like the bench design as it seems to make the cockpit look nicer and better for seating IMO. Or it could be every boat I grew up on had a bench so maybe that's it lol. If you are thinking on converting I wish you luck. The only way I got my new one cut out was using the old pieces as a template, there are ton of strange angles and cuts that would take a lot to reverse. Maybe contact Stingray and see if you can get the blueprints they used for it. Also I think it changes the side bolster pieces and requires a new Sundeck and its accesories, new arm rest pieces for bench, bench top seat and back rest. Again maybe Stingray can help. I am putting the interior back in now so will post pictures of how it looks when I finish. If you need help on how to get the interior out just ask, lots of hidden nuts, bolts and screws.
