I am new to boating and have a couple of questions. First i need to repower my 1987 16 ft aluminum sea craft. i currently am using a 20 hp suzuki and i don't move as well as i would like to. I am considering a 1999 40 hp mercury 2 stroke and would like some opinions on this engine. I would be buying this from iboats and want to know if anyone else using this forum has had experiences (good or bad) in purchases from iboats.

I can't speak for the 99, but I'll wear by earlier Mercs, any HP. They are just plain sturdy.

Re: 1999 mercury 2 stroke

Hi Chowder,
I am currently running a 25hp Mercury and have nearly 115 hours on it with out any problems.......until the other day.
Not a good choice for low speed trolling. Short of that, it pushed my 16 foot jon boat along at about thirty two mph (gps and sonar).
I am definately going Four Stroke next. Not as much punch out of the hole but alot quieter and much less stink.
Never purchased used from iboats, so no feed back there.
Best wishes in finding what you are searching for.

-2stroker
