1999 mercury 15 worn rubber isolators in mounts?

Hey guys. Was seeking some advice. I just purchased a 1999 Mercury 15hp 2 stroke. Just got it home and toghtened it up on my stand.

I noticed it seems to have excessive movement out of the rubber in the mounts on the midsection just above lower unit. Also on the upper ones I noticed that the one piece seemed to be split, it's in two pieces and I can move one around with a screw driver

This is my first outboard under 25hp and I've never noticed this much movement as far as being able to shake it around so to speak was just looking for some input.

Hmm......motor mounts usually last a lot longer than 15 years- I'm wondering about the cause of this deterioration. Gas and oil spills have a bad effect on rubber parts, but you'd almost have to soak the mounts for them to split like that. Regardless, you need to replace them before your outboard shakes itself to death. The mounts aren't that hard to change, and are only about 15 bucks each.

Thanks for the response. I just looked again and the top two are for sure split. The rear parts move around very easily with a pick.. Bummer I just bought this motor the other day and did not notice until today..

Bummer indeed! However, the first thing you should do when buying a new-to-you outboard is get familiar with it, and this will give you the opportunity. :laugh:

Do you know where I can find more info on replacing these? I searched and did not come up with much.. I can't even seem to find new rubber mounts besides used ones

The little bit that I could find sounded like I have to remove the powerhead? I can't believe there damaged/ split I'm having a hard time understanding how the heck it happened to a some what newer motor.

Before i spout off with part #s, can you post your outboards' serial number, just to make sure?

The numbers are damn near completely faded.. I can possibly make out 0G928210.. Best I can make out.

I may have been overreacting about how much movement the motor has off the mounting base..?

We have a 1436 Alumacraft Jon here at work with an early 90s Evinrude 20 horse. So on lunch i wemt to check it out and that thing moves around just as much if not more.. So maybe I was just analyzing a little to much and it's fine?

I haven't run the motor yet to tell cause its been so cold, I'm in MN.

Irregardless the two upper ones are split for sure. Although there isn't really any rot or deteriation that I can see.

Would you still replace them?

Broken parts only lead to more broken parts, of course you should replace them. BTW, your serial number comes up as a 1999 25 hp.

No kidding, I may have fudged a number or two. It's completely faded very badly.. About the only thing I can make out is the 15m and 1999..

Should there be a fair amount of play like that though? I've just never noticed it with my other motors so much I guess..
