Help! My husband drained the oil from the bottom plug of the tilt and trim because it had some water in it. It worked b4 he did this. It would raise the motor but the motor would vibrate - going down was fine. Had replaced motor of the pump last fall and put in storage -had a dead short in it. Now, after draining the oil, the pump runs, it will not raise the motor - doesn't seem to be any pressure in the hydraulic cylinder. What did he do wrong? Can he fix it or are we looking at repair bill?

Re: 1999 Johnson Tilt and trim

if he refilled it, the system now has air in it and needs bleeding, cycle the lower unit from one extreme to the other . All the way up...all the way down.
Several times.

Heres how, first release the manual release valve (access is through a hole in the side bracket portside), manually lift the leg, support it and check fluid level, replace level cap and manually lower it. Keep doing it.
when it won't take any more fluid ..tighten the release valve and test it.

manual release valve only unscrews to the circlip stop, a couple turns is all it needs to unscrew. Usually requires an impact screwdriver to loosen and a big screwdriver with a wrench on the shaft to tighten it, must be TIGHT to work.

You might want to get the factory service book.

Thanks that makes sense. Do you manually lift and lower the motor because it is attached? Is there a bleed valve on this unit. If there is, I can not find it.

No bleed valve.

If you've ever bled the power steering on a car its the same thing, turn the steering from one extreme all the way to the other, left to right a few times.

Outboards are just up and down instead.

First try to raise the motor with teh manual release screwed in tight. Help the motor go up by hand. Lock it up and fill with Dextron III ATF. Replace plug and cycle down and up. Now let it sit a few minutes and fill it again. Repeat until it works well.

We could get the air. We must have pumped it 100 times. This motor is on a pontoon. We decided to pull the trim motor off and fill with it off. You would believe the air that bubbled at. Kept pumping until we got straight fluid. This is alot easier then trying to fill through the fill plug. This worked for me and I would recommend this way.
