the motor was firing on 3 cylinders and upon inspection, the shop indicates broken rings in one cyl on the left side. they recommend not fixing the motor and are offering to swap it for installation of a new engine. is it not possible to repair one of these engines? it always ran well and they can offer no insight as to why it blew up. please help, fishing season is slipping away.

I have a Johnson 150 FIcht (1998) I am getting the same message from the service people here. No-one will service it or give any trade in . Every service shop I contact tells me the same thing. I spent over $2000 last year trying to get it repaired. It is still giving the same problems again after only 10 or less hours of service.

You could always buy a rebuilt powerhead. Inquire about a warranty.

New power heads should come with upgraded parts, not the old Evinrude questionable stuff. I put a new power head on my 2000 225 after it blew and its still happy after 300 hours. Cost with me doing most if the labor to remove it and sent to the rebuild shop was about $7000 and 1 month of down time.

So if you can cough up the doe for a new engine, trade in the old lower unit...do it. E-Tec is the way to go now.
