I am posting this on behalf of a member who cannot log onto iboats, it's the old broadband aussie gremlins again (does anybody know what is causing this?).

His message is as follows -

'99 Johnson 115hp BJ115PLEE serial# 4719349.
I want to repaint my outboard. Johnson dealer tell me the paint colors are platinum/black/clear. They want $28 for a 340gram spray can. Way too expensive, I'd like to buy the paint from a paint shop and spray it myself.

What type of paint is it?
Where does the black and platinum go? (anyone got a pic?)
Has anyone done this paint scheme and what did you use etc?
Any advise appreciated.

Phil (kiwiphil).

Phil,
Ive prepped Al. Boats at the factory and restored motors both at home and for work.I always try to use the epoxy primers for a good base coat, topped by 2-part automotive paint.
Bare Alum. does need to be etched to make anything really stick to it.
The rattle can product wont cure as hard as the car stuff and you cant add accelerator to make it dry faster to keep the dust off.
A light mist of primer is usually better than a thick coating that wont fully dry.Prep with alcohol or a good solvant BEFORE any sanding is done so you dont contaminate the surface.Sand with 220 grit before your topcoats to keep it smooth, wetpaper will work nice.
Tim Mattson
Sorensen Marine
