My dad gave me a boat before he passed away and it is a 98 model bass tracker lookin 17’ boat , 99 maybe and it has a 75 hp mercury force motor on it. It had a couple Carb issues instead of buying the choke push thing he went ahead and just drilled a hole in the cowling so you can squirt starting fluid in it to crank it after that it runs great the rest of the day last summer and I started having problems when I would put it in gear. It wanted to kind of jump out and so mostly all I do is use the trolling motor because I go around the Bayou where I’m at and I can use the trolling motor for anywhere I need , but sometimes I just like to open it up and go out on the lake. Long story short the forward is now reverse and the reverse is also reverse. If that makes sense can anyone please help me by telling me what I need to do to diagnose or figure this out . I change the fluid in the lower unit some metal shavings, but not much. And I flushed it. Added new oil to the lower unit Per specs, and it’s still doing the same thing. Someone told me that the rods that goes down to the lower unit flipped over. I really don’t know anything about the internals. Of a boat motor if someone could help me I would really appreciate it.

Did you remove the shift shaft pivot screw near the front of the gear case, by accident?

The fill and vent screws are on the side. The pivot screw is toward the front.
