I need a new lower unit gear case for my 1998 mercury 125 elpto outboard. I have found a lower gear case from a 2001 exlpto 125. Will it be compatible with my elpto?

Thanks racerone. Im looking at just the gear case alone all the gears and parts in my gear case are good. I just don't know if the gear cases are the same.

Housings will interchange but you will need to reshim the foward and pinion as you cannot just swap the guts over.....

Thanks faztbullet. I'll go ahead and purchase that lower gear case then. Now I'll start looking into what you mean by "reshim the forward and pinion." I love learning how these outboards work.

The gears are put in the proper position using shims.------This gets you the proper fit and proper " tooth contact " and also the proper " backlash " for long gear life.-----------Perhaps it is best to consult your local dealer to do this procedure as special tools may be required.-----------If you get this wrong you may end up spending more big coins.

Does reshiming need to be done if I get a gear case from a motor of the same model? Or is that step only if I get the different models gear case

Sorry , this is not the same as installing sparkplugs into a motor.--Each gear housing is slightly different depending on supplier / manufacturing date.--Gears must be put in the proper position using shims.----Run to a shop and ask if they can do this for you !!!!!
